First off, DON'T GO FRONT MOUNT. You will most likely have overheating pollens and eventual engine failure.
Check this thread out before you make an hasty decisions.

From: Kissimmee Fl,
U can go Fmic just fine as long as u have proper ducting. Especially u live in a place that's almost always cold lol. Assuming u have an s5 I would say probably an 8x24 or u can cut up a little and run a 12x24 like I had, but u won't need one that big if u are using a stock turbo... It will probably hurt performance if anything.

Obviously not a Turbo guy.
I have a car here that runs at 185 all day long, and has a 3 inch thick intercooler smack dab in the Front.
Oh,and no POLLENS with it.But the car has a Thirteen BEE Engine in it,if that helps..

So a 6x27 would fit fine?

Also, what should I look for when buying an intercooler? Any tips or suggestions?

If you must go front mount, I would run an electric fan, move the radiator back 3" so the intercooler can be where the radiator was, sandwiching them with no gap. This is kinda common with fd's. Relatively short piping with no extra ductwork. Of course, there is no kit for this. It's all custom baby!

I choose vmount and payed out the ***. A good setup will cost, but will be worth it. For a cheap solution, keep oem and water cool, or larger tmic, or get the Greddy/Freddy fmic.

I always recommend upgrading your radiator if you go with a front mount. I had issues with my engine overheating when I had a FMIC, but then again I live in a climate that can reach above 100F throughout most of the summer.

I had to cut my bumper just a little to get this one to fit in:

I think that one measured 27 x 7 x 2.5"

I run a greddy style intercooler and I pulled my ac condenser and now my car runs really cool. Stock cooling too.. Make sure you have an undertray as that piece is essential in fc cooling.

The blitz fmic kit for FD is designed similar to how id design a kit for the FC.
