No, the factory security does not disarm with the key in the ignition.
It only disarms by turning the key in the door to the unlock position.

Yeah...what they say.
Gotta love that alarm... sometimes it comes on when I'm pumping gas.
"Honestly, it's mine, I'm not stealing it... and yes this little thing DOES take $25 to fill it up."

I've never had mine actually " go off". But to turn it off i simply put my key in the drivers side door. It will NOT however turn off if i put it in the rear hatch.. The light still beeps when my hatch is open..
Is this normal?

How to make it go away
I had an electrical engineer check this out by combing over the schematics of the entire car and it works.
Get to your CPU behind the driver's side kick plate. There will be three plugs (make sure it's not your cruise control box if you have it). A very small one at the top, a rectangular one in the middle, and a plug that goes into the bottom of the CPU. The one you want to remove is the middle rectangular plug.
Unplug that and your alarm will go away forever or until you can take the time to trace out the short. I never had the desire to do mine so I'm running with it unplugged. The only side effect this will have is your idiot buzzers won't work anymore; meaning your headlight, key, seatbelt, and redline buzzers won't sound anymore. The Logicon, power windows, lights, radio and any other interior stuff won't be affected because they're on a separate circuit.
EDIT: for clarity

Loaf, for what it's worth, you're unplugging the wrong thing.
The alarm CPU is on the back of the passenger kneepanel, right next to the passenger side speaker. Remove the panel, and you'll see the silver box with the big black spool coming out of it. Trace that to the plug and unplug it. Remove the CPU's 3 screws, and reinstall the panel. Voila, no more alarm issues.
On a side note, most of the problems with alarm CPU can be solved by insuring that the plug is securely connected. My alarm used to go off semiconstantly.
EDIT: This method disables all alarm functions, as nothing is there to control them. This does not, however, disable any other warnings. Redline, key, belt, etc buzzers will still work.
