S5 auxilary port actuation.

I need to know how the 5&6 ports are opperated in a series five car. I am under the impression that the air pump opens them. Is this correct? My friend has the stock header a race pipe and a single apexi N1 he told me that he was going to wire them open or remove them all together because he thinks becaus there are no cats his ports do not open. If the air pump is still on the car what does it need to be connected to to operate the ports? I am telling him that if he leave the pump on there they should work am I corect in telling him this? He says that his ports are not working at all. What could be wrong?

The 5th/6th ports are actuated by the air pump on the S5. The VDI is also actuated by air from the air pump.

Only on the S3 and S4 13B's are they controlled by the exhaust.

The air pump, ECU, input to the ACV and the solnoids are needed for actuate the S5 5th/6th ports.

I don't know a damn thing about 5th/6th port actuation, but you may find some useful 411 here:

ok so he has to keep the ACV and the PUMP and that will make them operate?

At least the air pump... S5 emissions are really one of my weakest spots.

According to the diagram, the lead for the solenoids is before the ACV, but several people have said that they don't see where it splits, which suggests that it is at or part of the intake for the ACV.

It should be pretty easy to see if he has a S5. What vacuum sized lines are coming from that area?

He could always jimmy rig it like a S4 with the ~burntoast link.

Kinda. You can take the ACV off and wire in a RPM switch that will activate a solinoide(sp) that will in turn activate the ports. Although with this set up you can use the airpump, but you can use other air systems such as the electric airpump off of something like a corvette.

you dont need an rpm switch
all u need is a relay off of the actaul 6 port solenoid then u can wire in an electric air pump, to kick on and turn on teh 6 ports, all u have to do is routethe 6 port actuator hoses to the air pump.

the reason they dont open might be because tehreis too mcuh carbon in the engien and tehy are stuck closed, this happens a lot since some drivers dont beat on their cars often enough and carbon builds up, u want to rev passed 4k to open then and u have to be under load i belive to do this.

to clean them u need to take off all the intake manifolds and then take the 6 port sleeves out clean teh cmaber they go into and the valves themselves
and make sure they spin freely

to check if they are workign try to spin teh actuator rod by hand in teh directin it is supposed to go, if u can not do this then, there are 2 bolts to take off the 6 port actuators and then try twistign teh littel arm that spins teh 6 port sleeves, if they move freely they shoudl work

if they do and u stil think that they dont work , check the 6 port actuators by blowing air into them 2 psi is enouf to make teh rod come out, if that works too u can hook up a boost gauge to one of the 6 port actuator hoses and check for about 4 psi of boost under acceleration above 3800k rpm

hope this helps
