S4 vs S5 door cars
As the title suggests, is there a difference? Looking to buy some door cards for power doors, but need to know whether or not they mount up the same
I did a search but couldn't find anything

Both interior door cards mount up the same. Handles, vents, fasteners, etc are all compatible.
Here are some differences to note:
- Not all S4 door cards have door speakers.
- S4 door cards that DO have door speakers have a 4" grille, by the pull handle.
- All S4 door cards have a longer map pocket.
- S5s with door speakers have a molded grille and a smaller map pocket, placing the speaker in the bottom corner of the inset.
- S5 door speakers are 5.25", but the cutout hole for the grille is a half-moon shape on the inside, so only 1/2 of the surface area of the speaker actually breathes.
- S4 doors can be clearanced for speakers in the S5 location, but you won't be able to get the speaker in the exact right place unless you relocate the bottom window track mount.

i've been meaning to do a post about the different types of door panel, but there are a LOT of them.
Early S4, note no speaker at all. they exist with a few different upholsteries, and three colors, Gray, Red and Blue
The next is the 87-88 with the speaker, in the USA i think it was with the CD player. again several different upholstery choices, the same 3 colors, plus the 10AE black
and then the S5 moves the speaker. the inner door stamping actually changes, so while all the door panels fit, the holes for the speakers move around
the S5 was black, red, and blue. as usual there are many types of upholstery.
i don't have a good pic, but the convertible door panels have the upper molding split in two to clear the quarter window, and the coupe molding fits

One thing to consider in case you're looking at installing better speakers is the cutout size and location.
Even with S5 doors, I think one would have a hard time getting ideal speaker placement. Even if you enlarge the cutout to fit a 6.5" driver, the opening in the door grille is a semi-circle of 5.25" diameter. So you have some limitations simply due to the speaker grille. I chased down S5 door cards specifically for the molded grille because I like how clean it looks, but in audio terms it is a compromise.
So the ideal door speaker setup is probably an S5 door with a power-window S4 door card, and just add a custom grille over the stock location. Lets you keep the wider map pocket as well. It won't look quite as clean as the factory S5 card, but it has the best potential for audio quality.

This is all great info
Reason I ask is this (and it's pretty dumb tbh):
Me, in my infinite wisdom, bought some power door cards for my S4 GTU. I'm converting to power windows (per my understanding the body harness is already in place on S4. You just have to swap doors/regulators). But, what i didn't realize was that i bought convertible door cards, which have the notch in the top section. So I'm left with a dilemma. Either try to swap that top section with my existing door cards, or buy another set. Issue with buying another set, is that everything in my area is for S5, or vert.

Well then the easiest solution is to swap the top sections.
If you flip them over there are a bunch of Philips screws and I think a few little tabs. You should be able to just take all the fasteners apart and swap the blue vinyl tops from one card to the other.
I think you can do it without removing the vent, and swap the whole thing vent and all. Which you should if possible, because the vents are fragile.

or B the part that goes around the top of the panel is the same on all of the power window cars, and the rest of the panel is modular, so you can find a set of blue PW panels, and that part will swap over

So here's my dilemma. My door is missing this part:
Here's a pic of my door for reference:
I got the car this way. I'm 100% sure this is not how the car came stock, and the previous owner did some DIY with the door panel. But, as you can see, that top portion just goes straight across. It doesn't loop down and around. Did Mazda make a door with this design for that piece?

those are the manual window type, that is just how they are
you could just re upholster the bottom without the hole... or find a plug for the hole.
so my old boss used to be a parts manager at a Fiat dealership in the 80's. they had power windows, but there is also a plug and a tool to stick in there when the power window goes bad (BMW's have this too)
people used to come in and try to just buy the tool, thinking they would just have manual windows now.
joke was on them though, because the tool went in to the motor, so it was like 10,000 turns to get the window up!
the conversation was like this:
customer "i wanna buy the tool"
dealer "no"
c "i need to get my window up"
d, hands customer the tool "you'll see"

Or swap the pull handle from the vert door to your current panel, and just plug the hole for the window lever with something as J9 is suggesting.
You could 3D print a piece if you have access to a 3D printer.

Side question, not to hijack thread. Do the NON Courtesy door light cars already have a harness in the door for the light? I'd like to add the light to my S5 GTU door cards that have no door light..

Someone will probably correct me if I'm wrong, but I think all the S4's have the wiring already there for power windows and all associated things. I think the body harness is the same across all of them, regardless of what they came with from factory. The S5's (from my understanding), however, have the harness specific to the options that came with the car.
