S4 TII Eng. Teardown/Inspection. WTF?!?!
So we're pulling off TB, UIM, rats nest etc. get down to the turbo and it's manifold when we start on the LIM. We pop the LIM and AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! The one passage (not sure what the hell it's for) is clogged with a gritty, discoloured substance, kind like seagull poop/calcium deposit lol I remove it from the port/passage and stick my pinky in and downwards. There is a small pool of odourless, colourless liquid in the wee valley. I look at the coordinating spot on the LIM and YOW... it looks like it's been weleded over or something. Suppose to be like that? Do I have to rebuild? The shaft turns smooth and all seals seem intact, whooshes, etc. Take a look at the pic to see the LIM (pen pointing at the spot) and then you'll know what port/passage on the keg I'm talking about! HELP!!!

Yep, it's the same way with the LIM on my '87 TII. When the motor blew and I tore it out, I also found the mysterious seagull poop clogging that passageway, lol. I'm curious about it as well.

Take relief..... its not a major deal....
All turbo rotor housings are basically the same from front to back, so they have this coolent port. On a TII only the REAR rotor housings coolent port is used, it feeds coolent to the lower intake manifold which goes to the turbo center housing. The front rotor housing were your finding mystery goo does not flow anywere. The lower intake manifold is just solid there. Now the reason the goo exist is because the coolent doesnt flow anywere in this are and it remains stagnent and what ever pollutants are carried to this are they settle there do to no real flow. Now the bad news..... NO the goo does not necessarily mean its blown (if it runs good, don't worry about it), but the goo means you have extremely high miles and/or your coolent system has been neglected. Should be flushed (although nobody does it but the most **** car nuts) every like 30k. If your car runs good, slap it back together and flush your coolent system.

Xtreme - Thanks! But... I just purchased the motor, I've never had it running. Just bought it off a guys engine stand. I don't think the mileage could be too too high. The rotors are a little dark with carbon, but look at the condition of the LIM ports, and the what looks like recent porting work (pic attached and the UIM is in the same shape except for one darkened runner?!?!?). Now... the inlet for the turbo had a mini river of oil resting/dripping. Bad also huhn? Needs a rebuild anyhow, nasty shaft play.

dont feel bad.....when i look into my oil filler neck and several other tubes and openings i had residue from where water was mixing with oil and forming this pudding textured goop....i swear it looked just like vanilla pudding.....
BUT i have a worse story...
my engine blew a while back, yada yada...
but when me and my friend were taking stuff out to prep the bay for engine removal.....he noticed that the hose that goes from the turbo to the wastegate.....HAD BEEN CUT.....seriously....snipped right i half.....so this whole time i was running without the wastegate doing what it does the right way....
god i cant wait to get my car running the way its supposed to be running!

oil in the turbo inlet and excessive play? rebuild time, go ahead and have the wastegate ported to, might as well make it a hybrid and get a different front compressor.. hell might as well go full T04 and ditch all the stock chit....just kiding....
Seriously, get the turbo rebuilt and port the wastegate while its out, if you have the extra dough upgrade the compressor. As far as the block goes, i have no idea what condition its in or who you bought it from. The boogers you found are not any indication of a motor's health, just that the coolent was neglected. If the guy said it was a good motor then give it a try if you trust him, if your weary of it or do not want to go through the hastle of intalling it to only find out to blows and then remove it all over again, rebuild it or have it rebuilt.
