S4 and S5 NA TRANNYS?
Whats the difference in them??? I got a turbo series 5 motor I just put in my series 5 and I granaded the tranny trying to launch it... Can I use a series 4 or a series 5 tranny to replace it?

There really arent any major differences that Im aware of. The S5 N/A tranny is slightly beefier, due to the casing, but thats about it. If you've blown a N/A tranny up once already, why not just get the turbo transmission and rear end so you dont have to worry about this again?

The only difference in the S4 and S5 case is how the cross member mounts. Neither is really any stronger. The biggest difference is in the OD gear ratio. The S5 being slightly taller. Neither is up to much abuse from an NA motor let alone a turbo. Find a TII tranny and flywheel an save yourself some serious headaches.

Re: S4 & S5 cross memeber
You can use a S5 cross member on a S4 tranny. You just need to get the tranny mount bracket (the bracket those two little rubber cubes mount to) to cross member off a S5 tranny to marry the two. The tranny mount brackets are themselves interchangable with no modification.

Differences
<shakes head>
All mazda model M (type II) 5 speeds are designed the same with very little differences in design. The model R used in the TII is slightly stronger with a better synchro design but otherwise identical. The only difference between an s5 RX-7 tranny and the one in my 91 B2200 is the dynamic balancer. And the only differences between them and the 83 GSL tranny I have is how certain parts, mainly the gears are manufactured, and the output shaft is bigger around, after 84 they added a bracket to reinforce the pin for reverse idler gear because it was very easy to bend and grenade the bearing housing.

I still need to add a lot of stuff to the transmission pages. The only difference between the S4 and S5 trannies is that the S5s have a 6 lb "Dynamic Balancer" on the output shaft, besides the gearing. All 5 speed tail housings are interchangable, if you still have your old S4 tranny all of the tranny housings are swappable, including the bell housing and tail housing.
The output shaft is the longest narrowest part of the tranny, it is the most likely thing to break. If a synchro slips and locks into gear while you are in another gear it will lock the tranny up cold and the motor will blow it appart. The input and counter shafts rotate outward from eachother so when torque is applied they tend to seperate. This causes several problems, as the tranny wears the two shafts will pull farther and farther appart until one of the gears strip, or it puts the gears in a bind and snaps something.
Although Mazda 5 speeds hold up damn good on a stock vehicle they do not like performance and Mazda made them all the same, so although I will probably never brake one unless I boost my engine to some ungodly pressure RX-7s only have about 50 hp of headroom before you start snapping them pretty easy.
