Not only the GTUs got the aluminum hood. A lot of random S4s recieved them for no particular reason it seems. I pulled mine NA alum hood off of a 86 base for $25. Also, I believe the Convertibles recieved them to keep weight down and avoid the Gas Guzzler tax, but not possitive on that one.

Only upside to steel hoods is that they are much resilient to denting. Poor aluminum hoods can get dings if you look at them wrong.

Most people don't really care, but the hinges and hood striker on the body are supposedly different, due to corrosion reasons. In terms of strength, it doesn't matter, because you're going from heavy to light.

The hood latches are different as well. Having an aluminum hood and the latch for a steel hood makes me cringe every time I slam it to get it shut.

I've got both latches and physically they are identical so the difference would be the spring.
If your hood doesn't come with the matching latch you could always go to Ace Hardware and find a lighter spring- probably take some experimenting- and be OK.

Thats a good idea. I bought the latch off the car the aluminum hood was on, but conisdering the hinges were steel as well, It probably wasnt the original hood. Makes me sick to have to slam that aluminum hood every time.
