s4 n/a starting issues

I bought this 88 s4 n/a that the guy took most of engine apart BC he was going to do a swap but decided he couldn't. So I put it back together. Mostly was just throttle body, upper intake, secondary fuel rail, alternator, radiator, spark plugs and plug wires and intake. I got it all together and it cranked and turned over only for about 3 seconds and shut off by itself. I checked the coils and crank angle sensor with ohmmeter and those check out. What should I try now?

Vacuum lines, fuel, fuel pump, battery. Sounds like he had it apart for a rebuild so I'm assuming it has been sitting for a while?

Jumper the fuel check connector. And perhaps make sure the AFM flapper door is opening and not stuck in the closed position.

Been sitting since December. I'm getting fuel to secondary fuel rail at least. First time I got it turned over(started) the secondary fuel injector was pouring fuel out. Replaced the o ring now its fine. It'll start for about 3 seconds a day. The other times it just rotates. Should there be vacuum hoses on the backside of throttle body. Its a little clear piece with a whit cap and two nipples on it. Have no idea what is.

Most likely the thermovalve. Used to operate the double throttle diaphragm.

I just noticed while looking through a Haynes manual that I don't have the metering oil punk connecting rod attached the throttle body. Could this be it? I don't have the piece either anywhere

The rod just tells the oil pump how much to oil the engine housings. This is not related to your problem, but it is something you need to address.

Bump update. Got it running by doing unflooding technique. Motors knocking really loud and gets louder with increased throttle.

Well at least you got it running. Had a similar issue with my 88 convertible. I just picked up a used engine with 90 on the clock, dropped in and fired right up. Runs good, good luck with yours.

Any idea what's causing the knocking?
