Rx7 88 Rebuild
I'm just starting to think about a rebuild or a replacement... what do I need to check now before I decide if I'm going to go through with that? Would I be able to do it myself? And how much am I looking at spending for either?

You'll need an impact gun to get the flywheel on & off, but if a friend has a larger portable air compressor & gun it shouldn't be a problem. Most everything else a normal toolset plus inchpound & footpount torque wrenches would cover.
If you buy the rebuild video from www.atkinsrotary.com that should walk you through it. The service manual is also a great resource. Download that from www.teamfc3s.org

I just got through rebuilding an 88, I got all the gaskets and stuff from RX7 world,(all new factory parts) plus i had to buy new oil lines and side seals, all together it was about $800. the video is a must like they said I wish i had gotten it before the tear down.
