If the exhaust ports have the goofy flow control things in them, porting is apparently a bad idea. Just something to toss out.

Also, a general rule of thumb I heard was that if your fingernail catches on the scratches, they're too deep. BUT, a rotary will run with pretty much anything for a housing (assuming it doesn't have huge gouges in it). The question is how well it will run, and how many miles it will keep running.

Its always a good rule of thumb to NOT do your first porting job on a part that you intend to use on a car. Find some junk part and practice on. Even if its not for an RX-7, practice getting comfortable with the tools, and following different contours. That way, if you slip or mess up, its no big deal.

Those goofy things are called defussers. Porting an NA exhaust without doing a whole bunch of other stuff is a waste.

What is the intention of the car - daily driver - track only or somewhere inbetween? Cudos to 84' on his advise.

Pics of the rotor housings will be helpful

From what I can tell in the pics they look average to below average - if that groove seen at the edge (from the corner seal) is not too bad. Hard to tell form the pic. I will change the format and post for you later today. they seem like they are from a high mileage engine. Remember one thing the rotor housing is really a wear item.

You *do* realize that a heavily ported engine loses low end torque and it's smooth idle, right?

Leave the exhaust ports alone and just port the side plates. Open up the center ports, they are tiny. You can't go too radical without hitting the water jacket so you won't see any loss in idle quality.
