Replacing Hood Insulation

The insulation underneath my hood is all falling down and ugly-ugly.. I don't just wanna rip it all out, cuz of the heat factor.. So what's the proper installation procedure? What kind of insulation to buy, where, etc.. What to use to install..

Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

I'll look into it. How is it held in place? glue? clips? or what...

Having that insulation there is a boon, unless you are going long term without the insulation and with an expensive paint job, I wouldn't worry. (excessive heat causes paint fade). Plus, I may be wrong but i believe the insulation is also a fire suppressent, it is on some vehicles. If the engine catches fire, it's supposed to temporarily retard the fire for extra time to escape. Or maybe thats just newer cars.

i dont hitink it would make that much of a difference unless you have a new paint job and its show q. othere than that a lot of cars don't even come w/ them . I dont see it as a prob. unless youre worried about hood paint

I pulled mine out too, it was all torn up and looked ***-ugly hanging from the hood.

No problems yet in my 87 N/A. As 87rx7girl said, having your car sitting out in the sun is going to be alot hotter than the heat from a stock 13B N/A.

what about after: full exhaust (header/catback) and an intake? Will that hp gain affect the temperature that much?

Makes me wonder if I can add insulating spray foam to the underside of the hood that closely contours the top of the engine...Anyone ever do this? ~rich

I'd leave that stuff there. It's supposed to act as a fire suppresent as others have mentioned. If you're sure your PD is in good shape and you don't have any fire hazards you know of (which is probably what alot of burned FC owners think before it happens) then put up the reflective stuff or just leave it off.

*edit: Doubt that **** helps much anyways, the biggest cause of fire in the FC is the PDs, and becuase of their position the fire retarding insulation probably does jack **** (hasn't seemed to save many of the burned junk FCs I've seen.)

You want something that absorbs heat, not reflects it back into the engine bay, especially directly above the intake manifold. If you're gonna use reflective stuff, I'd use it to seperate the exhaust manifold / header and engine from the intake manifolds and on a turbo to wrap the turbine too. A pulsation damper is what sets your engine bay on fire when it starts to leak. It's on the fuel rail, and it's kind of hard to see, but it has a white-ish plastic cap, shaped something like a little mushroom, maybe an inch and a half in diameter. As you're standing in front of the car looking at the engine, it's behind and below the thermostat neck area. Hard to see it, though.

I took my insulation off my aluminum hood. The only things I notice are that the rain steams off of the hood (though it was coolant leaking the first time), and when I'm working over the engine, it hurts my head more when I hit the hood.

the design was when the engine caught fire the plastic clips would melt and cause the flame retadant insulation to drop and extinguish the fire. notice we have a section in the front towards the radiator completely uncovered i dont see how it would affect the paint reguardless i think the paint would bubble up by the radiator first

I've been putting more thought to this now that I've replaced my fuel rails with good solid S5 versions and noted that the engine bay temperatures could be nowhere near hot enough to damage the paint on your hood.

Think about how hot that piece gets in the blazing sun and look at all the paint in the bay as well. Mine is all intact and not flaking/bubbling, etc even enar the headers.

I'm just about ready to run out and remove that ratty *** lining out of there, especially since the fire extinquisher I carry with me will have a better chance at killing a fire IMO.
