if i would like to replace a pulsation dampner on my s4 na, do i have to pull off the UIM and whatnot?

if not.. what prep do i have to do to replace it, without fuel shooting out???

i have never done this before, and i read the howto on rotary resurection, but i would like to replace mine with a stock s5 pulsation dampner

Yes, you would have top pull off the UIM.

To keep fuel from spraying, you go to the back of the car, with the car idling, and disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector on the driver's side shock tower... the fuel system will drop pressure, and the car will stall. You then take your keys out of run, and DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY: some fuel will leak out, and if you still have your battery conencted, and you touch your alternator output post with a wrench and to any metal part, you get sparks... big ones (and probably end up welding your wrench to your engine).

Make sure you lubricate the injector o-rings with a little oil/gasoline before you put the new S5 fuel rail on.

instead of replacing the dampener, just take off the plastic cover, clean it all up, and before you put the screw back in, put a little dap of silicone sealant on it and than put the plastic cover on.

i wouldnt recomend putting the screw back in it will still leak since the rubber diahram inside breaking is why it leaks, it will slowly leak out of it and make the screw and silicon come apart and it will fall out again.

allways replace it! switching to s5 is prolly the best idea. i put a used s4 1 in so it might start leaking again someday.......

Generally, they leak before they fail completely, and you smell gas.

However, I wouldn't be inclined to trust that method. If you smell gas from the intake area, replace the PD *immediately* if not sooner.

Otherwise, if the cap is yellowed on it, and you don't know when it was last replaced... it's probably a good idea to replace it preemptively. I have a nearly new one floating around for sale, or Mazdatrix has them, or you can do a banjo bolt thing, or many other various methods of fixing them, but they're a small part that makes big problems.

WHen the screw pops out, it doesnt mean that its leaking. It also doesnt mean that its on its last legs either. If you smell fuel then your in trouble, and it will have to go.
Me personally, Im chancin it, I don't smell fuel, and it aint leakin, so im going to leave it until I get my turbo on. At that point I'll buy a marren PD and FPR. Theres a wicked guide in the archive on fiting these units, although I wish It had pictures or diagrams..

You've got a N/A, so you can probably do the marren PD retrofit you see in the archive. It's also got info on removing the upper intake manifold and all that. I just replaced my FPD with a banjo bolt, like a lot of other guys on the forum (some of them extremely knowledgeable about RX-7s). If you need pictures and stuff, my noob site (link in sig) has them, but it's for a T2. Dunno how much overlap there is.

Oh, and about fuel spraying, you don't really need to do the whole fuel pump disconnect thing. My dad's a mechanic and he said just to open up the gas tank. I took off the FPD (didn't take off the fuel lines or anything) and there wasn't any fuel spraying anywhere. In fact, no fuel dripping or anything. Or maybe that was just because I was low on gas at the time...
