Repairing Rear Collision Damage in the FC?
I have a great 91 coupe that has some rear driver corner damage. Its not terrible but its not something you can pull and bondo. I'm pretty sure my onlu option would be to have the quarter panel cut off and a new one installed. Before anyone starts with the "just get a new shell" and "your fucked" mindless responses, lets me say i'm not going to so dont waste space replying with such answers. What i'm looking for is something that tells me where the quarter panel is welded on the the body at, i know its spot welded along the wheel well but i need to know it all. I am keeping this car, and it will look pretty again. There is no damage to the subframe, suspension or inner structures. Here's a picture. What say you?
Any help would be great thanks.

well, you've got a nice little smuck my friend...
The quarter is welded at a seam where it meets the roof (approx. - run your hand from the back-top corner of the door, to the top-front corner of the hatch)
and again, diagonally from approx. 3 inches towards the center from the back corner of the rear hatch, down to approx. the top-outer corner of the taillamp.
It is also spot welded on the pinch weld inside the rear hatch, spot welded to the rear finish panel (behind the tail light, all the way down)
and in the wheel well...
the only spot to "modify" is in the door jamb, it just needs to be cut and matched.
However..........
That quarter can be repaired, quite easily (relatively speaking)
considering the cost of a new panel + installation approx. $600, + 13.5hrs = approx. 21hrs worth of time all together. That quarter can be repaired in FAR less than 21 hrs, including the inner and rear bumper.
If I were to estimate that I would tell you, about $1400(canadian) given that I can't tell what all is bent inside, but that is still cheapre than a new quarter...
but to say it can't be pulled and repaired would be a mis-informed statement

alright good to know thanks alot, its pretty wrinkled underneath that taillight was well though, i really want avoid putting pounds of bondo on there, i'll get clearer pics from other angles and showing the insides later today, if it can truely be pull then thats great news but it reall appears that it'll never be as nice as cutting and pasting a new panel in place.

ONE QUESTION - what do you think they are going to put on the seams where they weld on your roof, door jamb edges and rear finish panel edges - thats right -BONDO
people have this engrained fear of bondo thats is entirely groundless....
EVERY single car in the world that has an immaculate flawless body HAS bondo in it - garunteed, no if's and's or but's
But back to the point - since the damage is repairable (I wouldn't tell you it was if it wasn't I own a bodyshop) that means the area where the "dent" is will be pulled out to the point where an ACCEPTABLE amount of filler can be applied. There isn't going to be inches of it in there, but it will be there.
Granted, yes fully replacing the quarter will in the end give you a job that would be closer to the factory car than this one - it all comes at a cost, the cost being to the tune of approx. 2.5X the amount to repair it. Since you will be replaing the quarter, painting the entire roof must happen, lending the colour onto the driver's door must happen, etc. etc.
Just something to chew on...

classicauto thanks for all you info, however this dent is pretty hairy, i really dont know if this is something i can handle. Take a look. The quarter panel is bowed out a little, and actually there is a little inner damage, not much but still . . .

none of your concern, i just dont wanna get the "you still piad too much" bullshit
the car has a near mint interior, its a 91' Coupe with the "Option Package A"
Atkins rebuild with 3mm apex seals.
AC, Power steering stripped (but included)
Turbo II injectors and fuel pump already installed and I will finish the N/A>TII conversion
Aluminum TII hood (virtually perfect other than paint)
Came with a bunch of extra parts like an HT-18, two intercoolers, S5 TII ECU and a bunch of other ****. So yeah, the dent is worth it to me, i love black FC's.
I'll add the few needed interior trim pieces, hopefully find the black rear seat (w/ red stitch) i need, put the AC back in and finish up the suspension body and turbo, it'll be evil . . .
if i like it enough the targa fc may get sold.
