renewing a starter?

hey, the starter in my dad's 88 SE is shot, and he wants to repair it.
He told me that you can use most of the old starter, and only need to replace one part.
Is that correct? I went to Autozone and tried asking them, but they had no idea.
Anyone know what the part I have to replace is actually called?

thanks!!

maybe the brushes? those are the little things on the end of the wires....

describe this part to me. yeah, you can rebuild one, like 80% of the time it's faulty parts and most people go buy a whole new one

I know where your dad is coming from. Its usually just the brushes that need replacing. A twenty minute job and low cost. I had the same idea and could not find anything. Read this thread and the answer close to the bottom: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=82493

Re: Parts

The parts are out there - you just have to be a rebuilder to get them. The brush holder is prob. a $5 part. Look in the phone book for a "automotive electrical rebuilder". I will post the "lester" part numbers for all the years when I get home. You can then ask them to sell you the parts you need using the lester number that they go by.

Alternator and Starter Part Numbers

Most rebuild shops use the "Lester" Number. If you went in and asked for a brush pack for a "16931" starter they could easily tell you if they have it. Other wise they will need to look it up - cross the number - then check for the part. They might be a little bit more eager to sell you a cheap part if you give them less work to do it.
