Removing Muffler Heat Shield

Hi..

Ever since I put on a new exhaust system the heat shield over my right muffler rattles between 3200-3500 rpm.

I could poke around and try to cinch it up or remove it completely. Is it as useless as the shields behind my brake rotors? After I got home from work today I could touch my muffler tips and not melt my fingers off. It was plenty warm though.

Anyone have comments for or against removing them from an:

'86 GXL
HKS Air intake
e-fan
straight pipe - no cats
Dynamax y-pipe and dual mufflers

Please note the rattling of the heat shield is very annoying!

Uh, the factory put them there, so there definitly was a reason.

The heat shields above the cats are needed. If not, you'll probably melt your carpet.

The heat shields around the mufflers are also a good thing, as the mufflers can get very hot during long drives...This can have a negative effect on all suspension rubber in that area, shocks, etc...I'd just bend them up a little bit so the mufflers don't rattle against them...

Oh, and those shields behind your brakes are kind of important...They help keep water from getting in there...

That doesn't mean that there is no reason for them to be there....I have a magic rock that keeps away tigers...You don't see any tigers around, so the rock must be working, right?

Well, the shields appear to be there primarily for the gas tank, keep the heat away from that.

So your feet don't get toasty, Rico? How about the person in the right seat? Surprising that they don't bitch about it. I kept mine, but then I have 0 carpet, 0 insulation, and expect to carry some passengers to scare the hell out of them.

It's not that the muffler rubs against it. The muffler hits a tone between 3200-3500 that causes it to vibrate in every gear.

I'll take Aaron's idea of bending it up and maybe I can crease the metal enough to make the sound go away. Since Rico's car hasn't caught fire yet, I'll yank them off if my threshold for rattle reaches it's pique.

Felix, what has been the deal lately? You have been a real *** to alot of people lately. You need to chill. You are a mod, so you obviously know your ****. If you can't take people making mistakes or God forbid disagree with you, then you need to grow up. Mabye some of us are a little sesnitive. I'm SOOOOOO ******* sorry I have had a lot of REALLY bad **** happen lately, not that a JERK like you would give a **** about my ***** little problems, but when people say something you don't like, or try and give advise you don't agree with that is no reason to talk to them like ******* morons just to make yourself feel better. Go screw yourself.......

I thought it was funny.

I have heard lots of different people removing stuff from their car saying it didn't do anything. It cost $$ to design it and make it so it could be there in the first place. It wouldn't be put there inless it did something.

What the part does may not interest the current owner of the car but it must have done something or it wouldn't be put on the car.

Get rid of them but keep the one for the cat, your passengers will appreciate it.
