Remove the Stereo or Not?
I've been having thoughts of taking out the system in my 7 and losing some weight. As it stands I have around 800-1000lbs of stereo in the car at a cost to me of around 10k or so. I'm putting down 410hp at the wheels and have all the suspension mods I can bolt on. I like the performance but feel it would be much better if I lose the weight and stereo. Can't hear it that well anyway unless the engine is off or it's blasting loud cause the car is really loud.
So I put the question to you great members of what you think should be done.
Should I go for total perfomance and take out all the stereo and try to sell it?
or
Leave it in and just use the car for fun on weekends and mayb e hit some shows?
I like the race scene more than the show scene though.

remove and sell all of the stereo in your car, use that money to buy some new rims, and get some red molding, and gut the interior. Trust me, you will have alot of fun, i promise

You could always take the system out and not sell it. See how you like the car, then either, put it back in or sell it. Personally, I will get a couple of subs and an amp, but I doubt it'll weigh 800-1000lbs.

i'm disrespectful to dirt
i say take most of it out but keep the stereo. it depends how much you need your music. i currently have a gutted interior but will run 2 subs new speakers all around with new carpet and won't be that much heavier with stock. with that much hp a decent system is one of the least of your probs.

There's no way all that weighs close to 800 lbs. Assuming your amps weigh 50 lbs each (very liberal estimate) that would only be 250 lbs. The subs and "custom box" maybe weigh 60 lbs. The rest of the stuff is insignificant.
In the back of my FD I have a box with 2 JL 10w0s and 2 amps (one for components, one for subs) and all that weighs only 62 lbs.
With that in mind, leave it in there.
This reminds me of a guy around here that has a supercharged 02 Eclipse that is a show car. He got his *** kicked by my friends Turbo 02 Eclipse (custom), and all he could do was make excuses about the 1500 lbs of stereo stuff. I'm not saying you're making excuses, but I'm just comparing the stereo weight misconceptions.

westtxrx7 PLEASE show me pics of your 6.1 installed!! i have MD Quart 3-way component speakers and was wondering how i could set it up in my door panels....PLEASE show us your 6.1's.
hanks. And btw take all that stuff out...1000 lbs of stereo is overkill imo.
what im doing is 3-way component in the front, and RMB8 is the shock towers. One 4 channel amp and a cap. thatll weight mayb 200 lbs max.

Door mounted infinities
The whole floor is about 6 inches thick, all wood. I also have about 7 gallons or so of Fiberglass in the bins below the subs that will need to be broken out. 2 batterys back there as well. Everything was installed with the theft a priority. I will tear up the sub box and lower panel getting them out. Took 10 days to get it finished. I asked the installer who did it how much it weighed after he was done. He said at least 800lbs. Nothing you see in the back is factory. I have all the factory pieces in the garage. Everything you see was custom fabricated with fiberglass and wood. The subs are closer to 35lbs each. The box itself is around 300 + the fiberglass.
The amps are under the side panels and right in front of the rear bumper.
here are the 2 500's

how do you prevent someone from stealing your whole car? fuel cut switch or something similar? Also did you make the door panels your self? if so, what meterials did you use?

It stays locked in the garage. It's loud enough IF someone were able to get it started it would wake up the surrounding 3 blocks. Thats one reason I had thought of getting rid of the stereo. Can't hear it unless it's all the way up and then only if your at crusing speed. No cat, 3" all the way back.
Guy named Jimmy at Stanscarstereo.com in Lubbock did the work
It hits VERY hard with no rattles. It was made to win contests and it sounds fantastic when you can hear it.
Looks like the voting is close but I'm leaning toward taking it out. I sure would like the performance increase. Think I'll just take the whole car to the cotton gin and get it weighed. Then I'll have an idea of how much all that stuff weighs. I'll do that in the morning and let ya know what it weighs. You guys in the know can probably figure out what it should weigh without the stereo with the FMIC, bigger turbo, ect.

Well at first i was gonna say take it out but it looks so good and well done t hat it really would be a waste so i'd say throw a stock tii motor in there and use that motor you have to make a race type car like a fully stripped FC or even a 1st gen maybe a FC would be the best bet and use every perfomance thing you have on the new FC, just an idea but i jsut think it'd be a waste of all the nice custom work in there, I can't wait to hear what it actually wieghs.

Take all the amps and subs out. Leave the head unit and the speakers molded into the doors. Put a muffler on the car. Then you will have a stereo you can hear and a car that is quieter and much much faster.

What kind of 1/4 mile time improvement would I expect to gain from losing 800-1000lbs in the car? Right now my fastest was a 13.2@110 with a bad clutch and a slick track. I Haven't been since I got the new clutch installed.
The car is more setup for road and autocross courses. Would a weight drop help any with engine heat? It runs fine unless I'm on it hard for a time.

If it really weighs 800-1000 lbs., remove it, for the love of all that's holy. The (not-too accurate) rule of thumb is that every 100 lbs. is .1 sec. in the quarter mile. I'm sure that with the new clutch and ALL of the stereo equipment removed, you could trap 120+mph.

Ok, please go weigh your car at a truck scale. If it weighs over 3600 lbs (2800 lb car + 800 lbs of stereo) I will stick my foot in my mouth and take a picture. I have a REALLY hard time believing it weighs that much regardless of what your installer told you.
