Recommend me an intake :)

I'm about to pick up my 1986 GX within the week, I'm planning on doing the regular maintance stuff once I pick it up. I know for sure I want to change out the stock air filter, looking online and talking to some people there has been many recommendations, I am looking at spending about 150 or so on this. I will be using this RX-7 as my daily driver and to romp on everyonce in a while, let me know if you need any more information

That article was written by Apexi dealers who made up their own test rather than following SAE standards. It's basically an info-mercial.

If you plan on keeping the engine somewhat stock, the drop-in K&N filter will work just fine, it will retain the stock cold air intake, and will be cheaper and easier than any other top-notch product on the market. Removing the stock air box is really only necessary for higher-horsepower applications like ported and supercharged engines.

If you are looking for a cone filter and not a kit, the K&N and Apexi filters are pretty good. The K&N filter has the best reputation unless you read the Apexi propaganda and take it as gospel. There are many K&N filters to choose from. The Apexi kits are only for the 89-92 RX-7, so you would either need to modify the kit, or use their universal 80mm filter.

Cone filters that do not come as kits will require an adapter for the 86-88 models. Don't use the crummy adapters sold on Ebay. These two adapters are good:
http://www.rx7store.net/index.asp?Pa...ROD&ProdID=553
http://rx7cz.net/shop/
Unless you use the modified Apexi kit, you will also need a separate filter if you plan on keeping your air pump. Crank case vent filters will work for this, but I forgot the size.

I don't like the HKS intake as much, although it is a full kit and comes with everything you need, including the adapter and provisions for the air pump.

K&N also sells a FIPK kit, but I haven't tried it, and I don't know anybody who has. However, like the HKS kit, it comes with an adapter and has provisions for the air pump.

I think I might try the the kit featured in your last link, I have a K&N filter in my Taurus and it seems to feel fine (I have not idea what it feels with the stock), do you have any where to recommend to order it online? Thank you for everyone's help!

Apex'i makes a fantastic kit with quality parts that all fit into place complete with hosing and replacement screws! I love it! Very noticable difference too, OVER the K&N drop-in I was using. (I was not expecting a difference)

The only issue I have with the Apex'i kit is that it moves the AFM bracket too close to the radiator hose for my tastes, so I ground down the edge of the AFM bracket, and bent it a bit to move away from the hose.

I don't know of a good place to buy the FIPK kit online, but I'm sure that a search would find quite a few. Just keep in mind the FIPK normally sells for $150-200. You could piece together your own for less than that if you don't mind spending some time and effort.

Yes, but unless they have added to their line-up, I don't think they make a kit for the 86-88 RX-7.

If I were to go with the Apexi Kit what all items would I need to use to get it to fit onto the 86 GX? Also someone had mentioned that if I just went with the filter I would need these items:

AFM Adapter
cone filter
breather filter on air pump

If so let me know, thanks!
