Is there a chance you got the ground wire on wrong? Or swapped the ground wire for the starter with the power wire? I'd certainly take a good look.
Or the ground wire not being cinched down good might cause the problem. On all my cars the gnd wire goes to the long starter bolt and held down with the long bolts nut.
IF thats good then check the two EGI fuse in the engine bay and the ENGINE fuse in the interior for servicability (silly word). See if they're bloat (good word) out.
It sounds positive that the engine did start for a moment though.

Yeah, if you cranked it for a prolonged period they'd get very hot.
I'd suggest that now you've either a very flooded engine OR one of the EGI fuses are kaput OR the engine fuse in the interior is busted. Do you remember if the ground ring on top of the rear rotor housing got bolted down? It's the gnd for the ECU is why I mention it and it can get overlooked.
Some rebuilds are hard to start becaue of the initial low compression caused partialy by the corner piece on the seals not breaking away right away. You know. The triangular piece that is glues to the apex seal.
I'd say it's flooded. PUll the fuel pump plug apart. Spray starter fluid in the afm/air filter for two seconds. Start the engine several times this way the reconnect the fuel pump plug. Or make a fuel cut switch if you don't already have one.

sounds like a timing issue or severely flooded and possible vacuum leaks.
starter wires do not get that hot in these engine unless something is wire improperly, there is too much drag on the motor or you crank the engine for literally 10 minutes straight. the only time i saw smoke from the starter was when my coolant jacket first failed and i cranked the engine for nearly 10 minutes non stop cause i was more concerned with just getting it home than the starter itself.
double check the ground and positive connections.

the car is flooded. take out all the spark plugs and clean and dry them. then remove the fuel pump relay/fuse or pinch closed the fuel line, hold the accelerator wide open and crank the engine until you don't see anymore fuel mist coming out of the engine. replace the plugs and start the car by pushing it down the hill. don't let the car kill keep it running for along time while checking the temp and for leaks. oh yeah make sure you jack you car up in the front center as high as you can while filling the radiator to make sure you get all the air bubbles out of the system.
