rebuilt engine, but runs rough
hey guys i just rebuilt my 89 rx7 gtu (non turbo) all the way from the apex seals. everything is new, except the side seals but they were still acceptable. I got it running now and it idles at about 1000 after playing with the idle adjuster, but it idles rough. up in the rpms it seems to run great and pretty smooth, compression is right where it should be and it has a new fuel filter. I was thinking maybe its a clogged cat or something with the exhaust. one of my mufflers has a huge hole in it but i dont have any money to replace anything else right now. Also my air filter is pretty dirty ... Does anyone have any simple fix solutions i could try without having to dump a couple hundred bux into my exhaust ? And if i do need a new cat would it be possible to run a straight pipe for now until i can afford that ? Any suggestions would help, thanks.

Rotary rebuilds, especially with used housings, are not 100% when first started up. IN fact compression is lowest right now, it will continue to build as time goes on. YOu sometimes cannot expect them to idle properly for the first few hundred miles. Just bump it up to 1100-1200 or so and drive it for a while. After you get a thousand miles or more, then worry about adjusting the idle and TPS.
