rebuild or swap....
Ok so I have a 1988 GTU, and the coolant seals are bad. Would it be cheaper to make the car s5 by swapping everything that needs to be done or just rebuild the one that I have now? Anyone have any idea how much a N/A - N/A swap would cost? All comments are welcome
Changing series is a major pain in the butt so make sure you research it before you attempt it.
Rebuilding costs depends on how and what you do.
Swapping in a full S5 is probably $500 (depending on where you find it) for the motor and a ton of install work.

might as well go turbo, thats what i would do if i had the money...
but i know thats prolly not what you want to do... Switching models is gonna be difficult. I would go with just the rebuilb... good luck tho with what ever you choose though

You are also talking turbo, you can get a used S5 motor on the boards for $500 or less.

Can't help you on prices, but the best (read - easiest) is to stay same series NA.
If you have time, you can pull out your engine, check wear and warpage and go from there whether to swap a used, a rebuild, or rebuild yours.
From there, you have more variables when it comes to how many new gas and oil control seals you're replacing, whether housings are new or lapped or used, etc.
Re: Poster who did a S4 to S5 swap in one day...more info please (installation for beer money only?...what about wiring to the chassis, interior gauges, harnesses, etc.)?

Well I'm just going to use this car to DD so I think I'm just going to swap a used s4 since it seems to be the cheapest and the easiest to do. currently I don't have the place to rebuild a motor but I will probably just keep my old one and try to study it and eventually rebuild it.
i changed series, unless your going stand alone dont even bother, is unhealthy for your engine due to the different series specs and its a pain in the ***, just rebuild or buy in the same series
