rebuild question experts help

ok so i was wondering about scoring the rotor housings and side housings to help compression. I know when you rebuild a piston engine that your suppose to sand down the cylinders to even the surface and help compression. Should you do the same thing to a rotary engine or is that a bad idea.

I have my housings lapped to a surface roughness spec that Daryl Drummond provided to me. Works well.

its a REAL bad idea to do it yourself.... the surface has to be perfectly level... you'll never get it at home. You need to send them out to have them lapped.. Mazdatrix is one source that I know of.. there are several other competent shops that can do it as well..

It aint cheap, (like 60 bucks per FACE.. 4 faces, 240 bucks (and you really sould do all 4 at once)) but it beats the snot out of buying a new housing.

Ah i see. Ya i didn't think it was a good idea in the first place. My father who has a good bit of knowledge about machines told me about it, But he wasn't sure if i shold do it on my rotary. thx for your input man.

what does it cost for the nitriding of the end plates. Does it give it more thickness than the original nitrided surface?

Does anyone know of any good shops in Canada that will do "lapping"? How common is it for mechanics to be able to do this?

Gas Nitriding can only "penetrate" so far. Last batch I had done was $150/100lbs. Then the plates had to be lapped, + shipping to and from each shop.

My P-Port front iron is at the lappers right now.

The thing to remember is that the amount removed from each iron is cumulative. It all "stacks" u. MAZDA REMAN LORE has it that a mana engine will use no more than 1 lapped plate.

Cool, that is a very good price, I have access to lapping machines, just curios about the nitriding costs. I have been reading some SAE Mazda papers about the nitriding surface, and to see how thin it actually is and how fast it wears out is incredible. It is really not that great of a surface coating, I would personally only put Cermet parts back into my own personal motors. Same with the micrporous chrome surface on the housings, when you see Mazda's actuall test results, they leave alot to be desired. It was easy to see how much the Cermet coatings will help.

And to answer the rebuild parts question,

for sure replace the following,

apex seals and springs, corner seals and springs, and all internal soft seals, and a thermal pellet replacement plug. Probably a thicker front spacer too. And I would for sure get the housings lapped at a minimum, but I would highly recommend cermet b housings from JHB Performance, cheaper and better than new.
