Rebuild basics

hi ive been wanting to rebuild my engine for awhile now but time hasnt been available, but now i have all the time i want to do it. ive been doing some research and found that you can buy rebuild kits or just order oem parts from a mazda dealership. Since money is a BIG issue and i figure i can get a good discount from a mazda dealership i wanted to know what are the basics i need in a complete rebuild? Ive been making a list and i think i have a rough idea. I need experienced people to help add/remove parts from the list!!! :P heres what i have so far

- apex seals/springs
- engine o-ring
- 12 side seals/springs
- 12 corner seals/springs
- front/rear main seal
- pilot bearing
- pilot seal
- installation gasket

Thanks for any help you can provide. If anyone knows part prices from Mazda that would also help.

you can get the internal and external gaskets from rotaryaviation.com for a good price, i would also suggest their apex seals but i have heard their apex seal springs are not the greatest, you will only need to replace the side seals and corner seals if they are worn out or have a problem with them. pilot bearing seal is part of the pilot bearing, really only needs to be changed if you are doing the clutch or damage it during installation or if it is defective to start with.

Man we need a rebuild supply guide.

Someone should give a list of EVERYTHING you need, including tools and helpfull information, like a particular rebuild video.

I don't mean how to do it, the video explains that ****, but a list of all things needed to do a GOOD rebuild. We could have a part list for
-minimum
-recommended
-New

Where minimum would be just the very basic supplys, recommended would be all the seals including all bearings in the engine. and new could be like housings and ****. We could have lists of vendors where to buy the **** from beside the items we mention. for ex

-new housings (insert mazdatrix, racingbeat links here)

We could all put our two cents in for what is all needed, and then when we all agree on parts, we could close the thread, and make a new one just for the archive with all the info.

anyone agree?

Yeah, there be lots of good stuff I've come across that aren't in the archive. Just off the top of my head I can think of...re-filling coolant so there's no bubble and how to see if you need new struts. I was checking out the FD forum, and they've got a huge list of junk, all arranged alphabetically.

This has been covered so many times. A search for "rebuild seals", "rebuild parts", "basic rebuild" and variations on that theme should turn up what you need.

A little bit of advice though. Rebuilding an engine with cost as the primary concern is a recipe for disaster, especially if it is your first.

would be nice if we had a thread that was archived on the subject, a search only nets you a hunred pages that can be a PITA to find the info you need.

that was a very good idea, i would love to see someone post a complete rebuilding guide with everything from the cheapest way all the way to a overdone rebuild. its weird that no-one has done that yet when there are more useless stuff in the archives

Aaron - im fully aware that im setting myself up. but i really dont have a choice. i need to have my car running now and i only have so much money. im planning on buying a new engine later and rebuilding and adding a turbo. but untill then i need some way of getting around. if my car lasts a year or two before blowing a seal then i will do the swap and be happy enough

i figured i would just do a reasonably priced reliable kit, most of the parts are mazda and it won't break the bank but some people may prefer different apex seals but i hope it helps a few people out.
