The reason to change your oil every 1000 miles!
The RX7 engine holds 6.1 quarts of oil.
While doing a oil change, only 5 quarts comes out.
1 quart is staying inside the oil cooler and lines.
So every oil change you do, you are still running one quart of bad oil mixed with it, so every 3 oil changes, run the third oil change for about 20 minutes and change it again and this will help you enjoy your engine for many more years.
Trust me I have 310,000 on mine and still runs flawlessly

Can you spell "Obsessive-compulsive"? If you leave 1 of 5 (20%) quarts in the engine, you might be able to make the argument that you should reduce the change-interval 20% (from 3k mi. to2.4k mi.) but how do you get to a 66% reduction?

can't you just add 1 quart of fresh oil with the drain plug off so you truly 'flush' the oil line?
and won't the fresh filter filter out the remaining contaminants in whatever old oil's left?

Haven't we ALL heard this
That is what I say. I like the thought of changing the oil every 1000 miles. But then it comes down to doing it.
If you pulled the oil line of the side of the engine it would not drain the cooler. The cooler has a thermostat in it. It closes at approx 140°F. So if that is cooled down the cooler should still have oil in it.
IF you are super **** you could undo the cooler line on the side of the engine. And pull out the cooler thermo stat.

sometimes, I change the oil right @ 800 miles.
The reason I do this, is I can feel the power drop off.
Once I put fresh oil in, its like running a new engine and runs so much smoother.
Also don't forget your burning that old oil and any contaminets will be inside your combustion camber now.
besides that, right @ 1000 miles the oil is wasted and smells of gas and is basically shot oil.
For the $8. I enjoy using new oil all the time, and maybe that is way my engine is still running after 15 years of drag racing sometimes as much as twice a week. This doesn't include Saturday night @ the illegals doing 140 plus runs over the bridge. Gandy Rules!

why not just change the filter every 1000 miles? I mean **** I burn a quart every two weeks, and sometimes if i drive enough I can go through a quart in a week, so thats about every 500 miles I add a quart of fresh oil, and by 3000 I have put 6 quarts in......

You do 140 over the gandy bridge at night? sweet.
I've only got to 110 on there...thought of a blowout over the water makes me nervous. Is there racing at the gandy on saturdays? does it cost anything? How often does it get busted?

Jeebus! That a lot of wasted oil! I'd have to change by oil every month or so. I think I'll just stick with every 2-3k, and I'll dump a fresh quart down the local stream. How much does that run you a year? Probably more than my cars worth.

Yep, you're right. There isn't a car in the world that you can get 100% of the oil out. This is usually understood and maintenance schedules are probably adjusted for it. Frequent changes will more than make up for the residual oil in the lines, cooler, etc. I never bother with wasting oil by pooring some in and hoping that what drains out is dirty. Hot oil change and gravity are good enough for me. Playing with oil lines/coolers is asking for a leak or component failure. Flushing is only necessary for rebuilds and abused vehicles.
Because of laziness, I change mine between 2-3k miles. Mileage variance is because I usually have to plan on it for the weekend, grab the filter/oil, and actually be willing to get my hands dirty.
I used to put 1k miles a week on my car. It would be a cold day in hell for me to waste every weekend on maintenance. But, I have never seen a car break when overly maintained. I have definitely seen many poorly maintained cars break.
I too have noticed that the oil always has that gas smell that none of my others cars every had. So, I would say that it isn't obsessive compulsive. Gasoline isn't known as a lubricant. Sometimes when I am lazy, I'll change the oil without changing the filter just to get rid of the gas smell in the oil. This usually happens when I am early(under 2k) and know that I will be too busy to maintain the car on time and know that I will do both 2k miles later.
Plus, the cost of oil/filters isn't too high. Oil/filters at the local ...marts are pretty cheap. It only gets expensive when synthetics and overpriced filters are used.
And, for people who go through a lot of filters and oil, sales/rebates/online stores are a must so that you can buy stuff in bulk. Every now and then I can grab a case of filters for $25 from ebay or online closeout store. $2 for a filter and $6 worth of oil isn't expensive.

I would probably change my oil every one K miles. After all the $$ i spent building her up i think i woul do the same as GLHS.

I have been racing out there for almost 15 years now.
Yes always on Saturday night, I often see 300 to 400 people on both sides of the highway. but you need to meet some people, because the good **** happens in secret locations for real money.
Yes, you get busted, if you can't drive good enough to get away, or just too slow.
I'll take ya for a ride @ 140
