Thumbs up re-rebuild ALMOST started... Smoke from the dipstick hole?

I re-rebuilt using my Atkins seals with 800 miles from the previous rebuild. I swapped my 140k original TII housings and rotors for some 60k mi. N/A housings and rotors that I ported etc.

So I've been working on my re-rebuild project for most of the day. I put everything together as meticulously and as patiently as possible. This is the first time I've put this thing together from the ground up, so there is slight potential for error. I had never put together the vaccum lines, wiring harness or the fuel lines before. Also I've only removed and installed the UIM two other times. Pretty much I'm a "learning" n00b.

I'm pretty confident that everything is put together correctly, but I'm not positive because I wasn't able to get the car started... I "got" oil pressure after cranking for about 20 seconds. I made sure all of the plugs were connected and the IC piping was tight and than I tried to start it. It pulsed akwardly like it was trying to catch, but it evidently flooded after a little cranking. I unflooded it and cranked again, this time I noticed smoke wafting up from the engine bay after I stopped cranking. It was noticably coming from the oil dipstick tube... So I figure that this is maybe RTV or Hylomar or Vaseline or something? It didn't necessarily smell like fuel. Pretty much I tried starting it after unflooding it 3x. After failing, I decided to compression start it, because this is what got my first rebuild to start up (on the first try).

It wouldn't compression start. It would gurgle deeply and hover around 600rpms (with no throttle response) before coming to a stop. I tried to do compression start it 4 or 5 times with no success. What should I check/do?

One thing to keep in mind is that I never did anything to the timing, so I assume that it's WAY off.

This is really n00b, but could my fuel lines be reversed? (I'm assuming if they were I'd get NO fuel though)

If you can think of any questions that would aid you helping me figure out my problem, please ask away.

well. haha. I adjusted the timing this morning and although it didn't start, it DID when I compression started it!!! No leaks, nothing! I'm muy, muy excited. It sounds AWESOME and drives so smooth. I re-rebuilt using my 800mi. old Atkins seals (2mm apex, solid corner, 60k mi. OEM side seals and race corner springs).

I am SO EXCITED!!!! unghhhhhh, yeahhhhhh!!!

After 15 miles and about 30 minutes of idleing it almost already starts on it's own!

BTW, wayne88N/A, I used some info that you gave another n00b (on an old thread) on how to adjust the timing, so thanks.

yeah i was also gonna say, with the fuel hoses hooked up backwards, fuel flows through them enough to fill up the lines, just not enough to keep the car running. anyways i guess you got it all figured out

i'm gonna be going through this thursday night/friday when we install my rebuild i'm no noob, but there are ALWAYS speedbumps in your plans when installing a rotary

i'm really glad to hear its working well for you
