Are the hose connections on our radiators angled down for any specific reason?

I noticed that stock and aftermarket radiators are all set up like this. The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to make a shroud for my efan and it would be easier and look better if I lobbed off the 45 and made it a straight connection.

 

That's so the snorkel from the stock airbox can ride over the hose and clear the hood.

If you delete the airbox/snorkel, that bend on the rad bung no longer makes sense.
