racing seat installation

ok so i just bought 2 recaro racing seats (touring). the only thing is the shop would not install them for me. so how do i do it? i looked through the haynes manual and it doesnt give any solid info on how? is there a link that can assist me? because i will probably have to install the seats when i pick them up this afternoon as they wont fit in my rx.

aswell, i just posted a thread about the gang switch or master switch for my rx7 it is an 86 rx7 gxl NA. where is this switch? how do i locate it? there is a short in it apparently as the electrical shop pointed out to me. my windows do not roll up or down and it is very frustrating. please advise!

there are 4 bolts holding the stockers down i think. just unbolt that, and modify the brackets from the stockers to fit those seats(welding involved i think), or buy brackets that are rx7 specific for that seat. I am sure there is a shop that will do it, kind of weird that shop wouldnt do it.

If Recaro sells a mounting bracket specific to the model of your RX-7, that would be the simplest way to go. However, I will warn you about something that I ran into when trying to install a Corbeau racing seat in the passenger side.

The OEM passenger seat has a bit of a strange slider/track arrangement in that the inner slider/track is at a different level than the outer slider/track. The inner track is kind of installed up inside the seat bottom while the outer one is at a "lower" level. That's because the inner track is actually bolted to the side of the center transmission tunnel. You will see what I mean when you remove the OEM seats.

Using the Corbeau mounting brackets, the Corbeau seat fit fine in the drivers side with adequate headroom when wearing a helmet. The identical Corbeau seat bolted right in to the passenger side with the Corbeau bracket, but it sat significantly higher due to the staggered OEM mounting points. The attached image will give you an idea of what I'm referring to. So, if you need helmet headroom in the passenger side, you may run into this problem. I hope not. I ended up returning the seats and am waiting for a refund. I have put this project aside for the time being but will get back to it before Spring.

what i did was unbolt the brackets from the car (the 4 bolts he mentioned) and then unbolt the brackets from the seat (4 bolts in the sliders). after that i used the universal sliders as a template to drill the holes on the stock brackets so they'll fit the new seat anv viola!!!! here are some pics of the install:

what he said is true - the stock passenger seat bracket (the left side) is seated in an angle becuz of the transmission tunnel. the only way to accomodate that is with a custom bracket. unfortunately, i havent made the measurements yet to fix the problem (the seat is held by one bracket..lol) because i didnt have time to but it's only me in the car so i dont mind. but that will be the hardest part to do. good luck

Go48,

Noticedd you returned your seats...not to your liking? I ordered some Corbeau CR1 Seats with the brackets. Those look like the seats I got, only I got black...and by the looks of it, you have a 4pt or 6pt cage as I do. I was concerned about headroom as well as my Sparco Pro 2000's sat real high.

Any issues with the seats fitting in your car with the cage? I dont care about the passenger side...all I need is clearance for myself.

Anyhow, what type of seats are those...model. Looks like CR1's.

Thanks.

Yes, those were the CR1 seats with the special fabric (don't remember what is is called) option. I liked the seats, although they did seem a bit large for the car, but as I said, I couldn't figure out a way to adapt the CR1 on the passenger side to the existing mounting points so that it would allow enough headroom for a helmeted person. If I could have overcome that problem, I would have kept the seats. If the passenger side seat height is not a problem for you, the seats will work out fine using the Corbeau mounting hardware. But, as my photo shows, the passenger side seat will be noticably higher than the driverside seat.

I returned the seats but kept the mounting hardware since I had drilled holes in the passenger side mount in order to mount the CR1s directly to the mount without the sliders. That gave me a bit more headroom, but not enough unfortunately. I plan to look into different Corbeau seats at a local race shop sometime after the holidays to see if one of their models will work on the passenger side. I suspect that will not work out, so plan B is to look into having a pair of OEM seats modified at an upholstery shop to add harness ports and have them recovered. Not sure that is something that can be done, but that would certainly solve the height problem.

I have an Autopower roll bar--not a cage--so there are no bars above the seats. The roll bar did not interfer with the seats at all. Good luck with your seats!
