Question Quick Noob Rear Differential Question

I have 1990 N/A Automatic. If I convert to a manual transmission, can I use the existing rear differential, drive shaft, and axles?

I believe a custom driveshaft would be needed. There's far more complicated things to consider on that type of project though. Are you considering this because you think your auto trans is busted, or are you just looking to swap to a proper trans?

You can use the existing rear end and axles, but I believe you will need a manual trans driveshaft. Easy to find one on the For Sale section.

so either manual driveshaft, both n/a and turbo, fit into the rear differential and into the manual tranny 100%?

No. You will need a custom driveshaft to mate the turbo trans to the na diff.

To make the manual transmission work, all I need is a manual driveshaft, rear diff, aand axles? Do I need any brackets, supports?

floorpan mounts for the gearbox are in different locations on auto and manual cars
you need to cut them off and move them,, or you need a custom banana gearbox x member

the tailshaft needs to be custom if you retain the NA rear end
turbo spline at the slip yoke,, NA diff pattern on the diff flange

you also need to bridge the valance switch ( auto start lockout )

If you are staying n/a, all you need is the trans, bracket, and driveshaft.

If going turbo, you need the same but the driveshaft has to be custom.

Oh buy this thread is cluttered.

The difference between TII and N/A trans is the pattern of the splines that connect to the driveshaft.

The difference beteen the TII and N/A Diff is that the TII is a bigger diff. So the bolt pattern is different from TII to N/A. Each diff requires the matching axles to connect to the hubs, but the hubs are the same.

The TII driveshaft has a TII trans side and a TII Diff side.
The N/A driveshaft has a N/A trans side and a N/A Diff side.
The N/A Auto driveshaft has a TII trans side and a N/A Diff side, but is shorter. You can use it but I would only use up to the point where you can afford getting the Mazdatrix hybrid shaft.

The TII driveshaft is also thicker then the N/A Driveshafts.

Here is a thread that has information on the driveshaft lengths.

Because you are going from Auto to Manual, you of course have to deal with the trans mounting, the extra pedal, the shifter, and the clutch/flywheel.
