a bad afm i would imagine is not much different from no afm. with no afm, the car may or may not start but certainly will not be drivable at all. if you think your car is running rich, it may be a few other things. have you checked what codes your computer is throwing? things like a broken/bad water or air thermo sensor will result in the ecu richening up the mixture somewhat.

constantly getting pops? or at high rpm shifts? when do you get it. if you have free flowing exhaust and no catalytic converters it is normal that it will do it at high rev shifts, or revving up and getting off the gas.

Did you open the AFM cover?
Did someone else open the AFM cover?
Did you DROP the AFM on the ground?
Did someone else DROP the AFM on the ground?

If the AFM mounted at an angle?

If you answered NO to all those questions, stop blaming the AFM!

I get the same 'corn pop' sound out of my exhaust when idle (s4). Havent checked the codes yet, but ive got all my cats. It does sputter when I rev high and let off the gas (not sure about high-rev shift). I thought this was normal or something being my first rotary and manual car.

Le sigh... ive got alot to learn. Better start flipping through the fsm.

The anti afterburn valve in the ACV prevents the popping when you let off the throttle. No ACV? Then POP.

If you suspect your AFM is acting up, go grab your multimeter, your copy of the FSM (Factory Service Manual, available for download all over the place), find the page discussing the AFM tests, and have a ball.
