The best automatic transmission fluid is a trash can, then eventually gear oil when you put in a 5 speed.

If you really want an auto... you will never be able to drain out that much of the fluid. I assume you are asking because you are about to do a fluid change or the fluid has been lost somehow.

Ouch.

Yeah, thats pretty accurate, the torque converter holds quite a bit and can't really be drained while on the car.

Rear diff barely takes 2 quarts. in fact, I think its like 1.5 quarts. I usually buy 3 and have a full one left when I'm done and throw away any partials.

I speak from experience, I had to live with an auto N/A. It was tragic.

I drained and filled mine one time and it only took 3-4 quarts. Even then I think I overfilled it at first. It was so long ago...

I think you're right Alex.
If just changing the auto-fluid it's about 3.75 quarts.
I changed mine last fall, in preperation bought 8 quarts of B&M Trick-Shift (later to be bought out by by Hurst - Hot Shift ) I put the first 4 quarts, started the engine, went through all gears and checked the dipstick.
WOW! It was past the full line.
Took it for a ride and it was still over the Full line.
The rear took about 1.4 quarts and was a real party squeezing that viscous oil through a piece of vacuum tubing.
The auto shifted better but not worth the $5.00 per quart at the AutoZone store.
It did take some weird noises away and now shifts at 6.5K (was around 5K) but I'd love to puke this tranny and get a real 5 speed. Too bad I have minor arthritis and it hurts to drive a clutch some days.
