Question About Reman Engine

Hey, I was wondering how much would it cost to get a Mazda remanufactured S4 13BT. Furthermore, does anyone know how much Maz-Max, here in Houston, charges for it?

Wow, from 4600$ to 1800$, that's a big difference. Removal and installation shouldn't cost more than 800$ and if it does, I know of a place that'll do it for me for 800$.

I don't know yet if I have a blown motor or not, I did compression checks and the compression came out okay. But I just want to know for the future.

From the looks of it, it seems that getting a reman and rebuild would cost the same thing.

What would a good rebuild cost me?

Uh...no, since remans are sold out the door as shortblocks with flywheel, oilpan, and water pump.

R&R will usually run 1-2 grand depending on who does it.

4600 is a high price, even including install. 1800 is a low price for a reman, in fact I'd challenge anyone to find a mazda reman of any year 13b for under 2200.

You might know a guy, but the average rotary shop (you dont want jacks corner garage doing this work, trust me) will run 1-2 grand.

Given that they are the same thing, yeah.

I do them starting at a grand, but most rebuilds require a few more parts be replaced than my base price covers, so figure average for a stock build from me to be around 15-1600. Most everyone else in north america will average $2000-2500 for pretty much the same job. These figures dont include install.

Well, that might have included new housings, in which case it isn't that bad of a price.
Also, from what I have heard, mazda remans are good for if you need to get the car running for cheap, but they don't use very tight tolerances. It'll be a good engine and last for a while, but don't expect it to last like something that uses new housings.

the car was sold to me with blow coolant seals.......so I doubt there was much internal damage by the time I got it to the shop.

There is never a parts content guarantee or build sheet with them. In general they should have all new seals and springs, new rotorhousings, new bearings, a,d reused everything else.

Of course with all the blown and junk cores handed back in, they run out of reuseable irons, shafts, and rotors at times, and have to use new ones in there as well. In theory there would be times that they would run out of core parts altogether and simply assemble brand new blocks. Apparently from time to time Malloy can even distinguish when this is the case and sell those all-new blocks (though they cost more). You just never know what you are getting.

basically I was told they would replace all seals and anything that is too damaged to use would be replaced with "NEW" parts.

Yeah, thats what I thought. If they really do always use new rotor housings, then thats a pretty good deal.
