Question about reliablity

Allright currently I have a 1998 Nissan 200sx and am looking at buying a 1988 RX7. I am wondering about the reliablity of the car, I am sure the performance will satisfy me, but I have not been able to find out much about the mechanical dependablity. All the 1988 RX7's I've been looking at have had around 100k miles, has anyone had any problems with theirs? Is there usual problems that RX7's have? For instance it seems that all Nissans from 93-98 at least have a lot of electrical problems. I don't think any of the ones I've looked at are turboed.

lol, have you read any of this thread?

Yes there can be problems with rx7s, lots of problems and mostly you'll hear about problems. As for me, my engine has 140,000+ miles on it and it still runs nicely (even though it has a minor oil leek). It all depends on the car.

A freshrebuild and with new nearly everything and i'd say they're realible! A 1988 car still running 16 years later is pretty reliable.

You will hear a lot of stuff about how horrible the rotaries are, and how they are the worst and they always break down. But personally, I have had two and they both run better than any piston engine I have ever owned. As long as you take care of them, they take care of you. Dont take care of it..well...Just make sure you do your normal maintenance and they are just as reliable if not more than any other engine.

How much would it cost to rebuild the motor if it were to need it?

Anywhere from $1000 and up, depending on what you want done to it and who rebuilds it.

Search and the answers will come; there is a huge amount of information here.

Thanks I'll look into it, I think if I do actually buy the RX 7 I should have extra money to hold onto for any repairs/problems and modify it etc.

Yep, if shes had a good owner, even at 150k its still gonna be runnin right. But if its been drivin hard and neglected, well then you get what some of the members drag in

-Huge plumes of white smoke
-hesitation all over the place
-Major missfiring
-Idle goin from 1000-2500rpm every 2 seconds
-Cannot hot start

if all those are in place, STAY AWAY, lol, thats no project car thats a disaster car.

Just read the faq here and you'll be ok, its the one about buying an RX7. If the engine passes all the tests, and theres no rust, take it.

I don't see how that's a disaster car. Even if all of the above symptoms are present, and the current or prospective owner doesn't want to fix all of the above, that's not too much different than buying a FC with a blown engine. Just as in the purchase with any other used vehicle, as thorough of an inspection of the rest of the car should be done before purchase--that will contribute to its status as a disaster car vs. a project car.

Read the FAQ. There are several "How To Buy" guides...
