Question about an intake....

I know this guy with an '87 base model who has a pretty cool intake setup that came with the car. It's this weird filter setup that has a fan built into it. He has no cold air going to it, but it seems to work pretty good. The brand name on it is K and N too.

Anyone ever seen an intake like this before? It's the first time I've ever seen or heard of such a thing.

Later,
Ike

Not sure exactly what your talking about, but it doesn't seem like a K&N product. I have looked on their site quite abit too. Maybe its just a K&N filter with an electric supercharger. Look at www.electricsupercharger.com & see if thats it. Got any pictures?

The little fan thing in the intake sounds like this thing i saw on late night TV, i think it was on Speed Vision or something, its supposed to improve gas mileage and performance and **** like that, but i, personally, dont see how it does anything but obstruct the airflow, and the K&N part could be just a new filtercharger they have, i dont think that K&N makes that "Whirlwind" thing (i think thats what i was called on the infomercial or something). Anyone else know of anything to add? correct me if im wrong.

I think K and N was engraved on the actual air filter/fan housing, I'll have to double check that.

those little fan thingies look really ghetto. i dont think the fan could blod harder than the engine can suck air in. it seems loke it would just restrict the passage.
however it looks like it would make a nice compact leaf blower from what i saw on the demo video on that one site. lol

it might not clow FASTER but it would flow BETTER. How fast the air is moving means nothing if its swerling in different directions. Take the Hemi motor for example(only example I could think of), It is a great motor performance wise due to its hemispherical area at the top of the combustion chamber(I forgot what its called, were the intake comes in and the exahust goes out). Whe air enters lets say a nonported combustion chamber of a 302 motor it can come in a swerl in different directions, but in the Hemi it comes in and has a smoth area to move arround in uniform motion, thus creating more power. This can be applyed to a rotary because by making everything uniform instead of chaotic you an in turn boost more than you could with the air swerling arround like in a normal intake.

P.s. I think this is right. But it may not makes much sense

Battery operated leafblower/and dyno time needed

Interesting concept. Take an inexpensive model airplane fanjet unit and wire it to work at full throttle only. No reason why it wouldn't work. I have flown model airplanes and know that some of those fanjets can crank out some serious wind. Electric motors at 22000rpm don't last too long--hence the switch. 1/2-1 pound of boost for $300. I might just try to make one for my car. I wonder which ducted fan was used in the electricsupercharger kit? I wonder if I can use the shopvac??

The following 3 make tons of promises but I remember one of the carmags dyno'd one and they said to spend money somewhere else for more power. Adding a restriction won't make it flow better. The spiral/vortex effect won't last through the intake pipe, TB, manifold,VDI,(or turbo) on most long runner fuel injected engines. You would think that a turbo would create its own spiral effect negating the tornado/spiral/vortex unit(or pet rock-whatever you want to call it). Different with carburetors; any swirl could help with fuel atomization(especially in poorly tuned carb); Hence power or fuel economy increase. And lets add some snake oil while we're at it.

The HEMI made power because of valve location. Unshrouded valves with big ports made big power at high rpm. Ford used the word BOSS on some hemi engines and Chevy had some canted valve heads. Don't confuse swirl with tumbling effect .... and all that engineering emissions improving bullshit. Hemis have airflow throughput like peripheral ports.

Hey Ike, find out what he has and drive his car with it on and off and let us know what you think.

I'll try and take a pic of it, and drive it if possible. Probably not for awhile because I only see the guy at the street races, and the season is drawing to a close. I will open a new thread when I find out the neccessary information.

Later fellas,
Ike
