Question about front housing

Alright, i was picking out and examining the coolent seals on my dead s4 n/a and while i was removing the inner coolent seal i saw something that confused me

near the bottem of the of the front housing, there is a notch between the seal grove and the coolent passages. It doesnt look like it was worn though, its to clean, lookes machined. Is it suposto be there? or is my housing damaged?. I would post a pic but the only camara i got isnt digi

does anybody have large/highquality pics of s4 front housings?

http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/sidehsgs.htm Shouldn't be any passage b/t the water passage and the seal groove.
