putting tranny back in-what can i use to turn input shaft?

I'm putting my tranny back in an 87 rx7 non turbo and was wondering if there is something that can be used to turn the input shaft instead of the driveshaft. It's kinda hard to deal with benchpressing up the tranny and getting the long driveshaft in and turning it until the splines line up all at once. Can I buy just the piece that goes into the end of the tranny? Any help would be appreciated.

...What?

Why are you needing to turn the input shaft prior to mounting it?, you shouldn't need to turn it more than a couple degrees to mesh the clutch.

Bench pressing?
Us old DIY guys bolt a 8" x 30" piece of plywood on a floor jack head.
You bolt it near the end so you can use the long end to ramp the tranny on the jack under the car.
With some wedges it's almost as good as a transmission jack.

Of course if the engine's out:

Kenteth: thanks for the help but you contradicted yourself- "why are you needing to turn it?- you shouldn't need to turn it more than a couple degrees". Yes it has to be turned for the splines to line up and its hard to do when the car is on jack stands and your underneath the tranny pressing it up-the driveshaft is long and its hard to do all these at once-was hoping there might be just the end of the driveshaft available so it would be easier to turn that couple degrees-can't turn it by hand either, it's in the tranny too far.

Sureshot: The motor is still in the car, car is on jack stands and tried the plywood, it just gets in the way when the tranny is almost in and you end up having to remove the plywood anyway so it's easier without it.

Can you buy just the end of the driveshaft that goes into the transmission-maybe they make one in plastic like the clutch alignment tool?

One of the advantages of being a member of the "old man's club" is you start using your head more than your back. For $65 you can BUY a transmission jack.

The real trick is making sure the clutch disc is EXACTLY centered on the flywheel.
The plastic tool is often too loose & bendy for me, so I get way back with a good flashlight to check it.
