Putting a rebuild in, want as much power as possible, what should I do?
Yeah, thanks, I wouldn't have gone about it anyways, but its good to know it is a waste of time. How about tuning the ecu? How do you guys go about that? Or does anyone have one they don't need anymore? Maybe work out a trade?
Tuning the ECU you need to buy an Engine Managment System, Haltech, Microtech, Rtek, etc etc.
Tuning can free up a lot of power, but its costly and you can easily blow up your engine if you tune it wrong.

There are no "dyno proven programmed ECUs" for the 2nd gen.
If you want a programmable EMS system, you must wire and tune it yourself (or may someone else to do so).

so If I want my ecu tuned I have to have a secondary ignition system or SAFC or whatever you will in LINE with my ecu? There's no way to get the ecu to take the programs on its own? Or when you tune it can you then remove the EMS system or does it just replace your ecu altogether?
I guess what I'm saying is, the EMS, does it stay in series, tune it and then is removed or a replacement altogether?

From what I understand, a true EMS replaces the computer entirely.
Then there are other types of controllers like a standalone fuel controller that may run inline with the computer. I am not sure if it is truly standalone or inline.

If that's true then maybe that's what I've been referring to, instead of a reprogrammed ecu..a breakdown of sematics..any suggestions on a good one? I am your pupil, please teach me the ways of Engine Management o wise rx7 gurus..
A FULL standalone or EMS. Is a system that totally replaces your factory ECU and most frequently the wiring Harness.
They usually have to be buillt according to your vehicle and then have to be tuned.
It is not a beginner job by any means and is quite costly to have tuned.
A Piggyback fuel controller (AFC, etc..) is designed to modfiy your fuel curves or compensate for larger injectors, etc...
They are much easier to put in and you use your factory ECU and wiring harness.
But they have their limits...
You can also tune a piggyback fuel controller yourself if you have the time and some knowledge, but is still recommended that you have it done by a pro..
This is my limited knowledge.
Im sure somebody can explain this in more detail.

well just so you guys know I did work for 3 different shops over 3 years, been about 5 years now so I'm rusty, yet I never did much performance tuning work, just oem R and I's and your occasional carburetor rebuild..and aside from an oem engine swap and a twin turbo FD that ate its turbo shaft (nut slipped off and the turbine flew down the exhaust spilling oil straight into the motor, CRAZY) I never worked on many RX's. I was a american muscle guy, 351 cleveland's and 454 big blocks, but ever since working on those two and learning about how they work I fell in love with the engineering...**** all that mess under the valve covers...what's a valve cover again? Valve cover gaskets leaking? Mwahahah..oh, your timing belt needs to be replaced? Valves? Springs? Tappets, twin overhead cam unnecessary scrap metal...You have a lifter tapping or a rod knocking? Let me show you the way...I have seen the light.

A full standalone requires replacement of the emissions wiring harness and ECU. There is an engine management forum on this site that can give you a general overview of the popular standalones. The most popular units right now are the Haltech, Microtech and Megasquirt.
