Question Pulled A Tranny

I Pulled A Tranny From A Junk Yard, Bought It And Brought It Home To Switch Out, I Put My Shifter In It To Check The Gears And I Pu It In Fourth And Turned The Piece That Goes Into The Engine And The Piece That Hooks Into The Drive Shaft Spun,,,,,, But Thats The Problem It Only Spins In Fourth Gear Does Thi Mean This Trannys Shot Also........gggrrrr I Need A Tranny..

I don't know what the ratio of turns is from the motor to the tail shaft but to simplify things you could say at first ten motor turns would equal one tail shaft turn in first and 5 motor turns would equal one turn at the tail shaft in fifth. The lower gears wouldn't bother me but if you can see the tail shaft moving in fourth using your hand to turn it you should see it moving in fifth .

1 inputshaft turn in 3rd equals one tailshaft turn about. thats why they dyno cars in 3rd gear. so shove it in 3rd and try to turn it then and if you get 1 turn at the tail shaft. they you have a normal trany. and put some fluid in it and spin that arround. dont fill it up tho.

So is that true for most trans. ?

It worked just fine, clutch was newer. It's coming out because of a *gasp* v8 swap.

ya the only gear that the tail piece spins in is fourth it 1st 2nd 3rd 5th and reverse it wont spin the rear piece at all, i even held my finger on it to see if i can feel it spin and nothing.

that's wrong. 4th gear has the 1:1 ratio. 5th is the only overdrive.
