Pros/Cons of...?

Okay, well i was thinkin that I want to finally start putting a little money into the 7. I'm ordering a downpipe likely this week, but i don't know that I want to do from there on. Keep in mind i'm pretty new, so if I say anything that doesn't make much sense...tell me. Anyways, I wanted to know which would be the better value for my dollar. I have a local shop in town that'll
custom make me my exhaust from the downpipe on for pretty cheap (friends) but i was just curious as to if i'd just be better off buying an pre-fab aftermarket system instead of making it custom? I want to do what all rx-7 owners want to do in that i want it to gain some hp, lose some weight, and shoot some flames. I've been told of the volume that our motors will put out if you don't have any sort of muffling device..but i'm not too worried about that. I'm just looking for the better bang for the dollar. Any and all input would help guys. Thanks and again, i'm new so if I sound like a dumbass...thats..because i pretty much am as of now about our cars.

Is it NA or Turbo? I would say get some good cans with SS packing and have your buddy do it custom. That would be a lot cheaper.

Watch how much boost you start getting once you open up the exhaust. I think you might be up in the fuel-cut range with the right exhaust, so be careful. What other mods have you done? The wastegate on the S4 turbo is small and boost-creep can be a problem.

BTW - I really dig the interiors on the AEs.

Well, right now the car is essencially stock with the exception of a cold air box and cone filter. I do own a fuel cell thats in nothing right now that i'd be able to throw in there along with a badassed external fuel pump that'd cost me about the same as a walbro if I really needed it. You think i'd need that already? or, do you think i should jsut scrap the fuel cell idea all together and just get a walbro?

The walbro is such a cake mod, and cheap to boot. Yah, ya need to keep up with the fuel. With that turbo though, your foot will be your only boost controller.

Custom all the way.

Pros of custom: cheaper AND works better if done right

Cons of custom: can't tell you dumb friends it's a cool brand and show them shiney stickers

Backpressure for what??? It's a turbo, you're motor is only a 4 port . I'll chalk that one up in the newbie column . Either way if you're talking about low rev power you'll be fine. Like it's been said...watch out for boost creep (read:get a controller).

If you are at a point with the car that you can have it dissasembled for a week or two, I would highly recommend that you start off by removing your turbo and porting the wastegate. After that, run new wires (bigger gauge) to a walbro fuel pump. Next is definately a coulple of gauges - EGT, water temp, boost. Now you are ready to do your exhaust - I would recommend a fully custom exhaust. Also consider a boost controller now - you can buy electronic ones for ~$300 or manual ones for ~$30 (the manual ones you just set and leave, but the electronic ones you can adjust the boost from in the car and you have two preset boost amounts).

Just my recommendations. Some people will tell you differently, but my order of things will provide you the best (well, probably the best. I might have left something out) protection for your car as you do your mods.

good luck, and get us some pics of your car!

Kris

You guys are real helplful. Thanks for allowing me a few freebie newbie mistakes Anyways, my car isn't much to look at right now because the body shows its 162k miles. I know you're all like "you're gonna mod a 162 mile TII??!" But, with the $750 i have invested in it I have some money left over to put into it, and..as of right now it runs real hard and doesn't have too many bad signs, but it does show its age with a few bad things (good amount of blue smoke at startup, and easily flooded). i am planning on doing a rebuild here soon. One of the guys at the shop that i'd be getting my exhaust done at said he'd help much as much as he could with the rebuild, but neither of us have any experience whatsoever with rotaries. Is it actually do-able to do a rebuild with pretty decent mechanical skills and a pretty wide range of tools, although none rotary specific? Oh, and i went to that RX-7 store.net and found a walbro for $120. Is that what i should expect to pay for it? Thanks guys for your patience with me and all of your help again.

You s/b able to get the Walbro off Ebay or a group buy deal for around an even hundred, shipped. Mine was $99 shipped off Ebay with the correct install kit.

I have stuff to say on rebuilding but none of it from direct experience so I'll keep mum and let someone else field that one. I've torn down a couple but never put them back together. I will say you will need good precision instruments like dial indicators and mics etc. The parts are spendy but tear it down first, see what you need, then order parts. When I calculate the cost of a proposed rebuild it always comes out to the sky because I'm figuring just about every repl. part. Like I've heard you can get away with reusing side seals in a lot of cases. And I heard somewhere it's better to reuse rotor bearings if you can due to them being work-hardened. Keep mum, ha.

I wouldn't worry about rebuilding unless there's a real need, i.e. low compression, heavy oil burning, coolant seal issues. Mine's smoked a little on startup ever since I got it and it never floods and generally runs great.

I know you're all like "you're gonna mod a 162 mile TII??!"
- Hell, I'm pushing 180/120(eng) and just now starting my mods in earnest.
