project car.
hello, im Zac. im new hear and im young so sorry for my lack of writing skills. and if i put this in the wrong forum im sorry and please move it.
well ive been looking for a good car now, has enough horse power, rear wheel drive, and manual. i found a 1991 mazda RX-7 with 92,000 miles and a clean carfax report. im looking to buy it here shortly. once i buy it i would like to turn it somewhat into a drift car. something that i can drive on the streets, on a good day. and drift on a closed track on occasion. well so i got some questions.
the guy who owns the car says its stock which is good. ill learn to drive stick and when im ready, i was thinking about 100,000 to 110,000 miles id have the engine rebuilt. once i rebuilt the engine id have fun boosting its horse to about 225 hp. is that reasonable for a rebuilt 13b-t? ive heard some people have got them up to 350 hp but i dont think im ready for that much horse yet. and i hear that the engine would wear out faster. i wont drive this car everyday. i got a 30mpg chevy chevette thats ok to drive. but back to the horse power, is 225 hp enough to drift in, but not to much to wear it out fast?
also, im thinking the first think id do, before the engine rebuild, was to upgrade the suspension and brakes. i was thinking a brembo brake kit. i dont know how much those cost and how much better they are. is a a worthwhile investment? and i was thinking tein suspension. for the coil overs atleast. what else makes a car have a good suspension? i hear anti sway bars but where do you get those?
i know i sound really young and stupid but i would love to invest my time in learning this stuff. cars are awesome and i would like to race them someday. but im only 16 and got a long ways to go. so please criticize me and help me and stuff. thank you.

225 horses out of a 1991 turbo is very conservative!
Even a full exhaust system (with supporting mods for safety) is a *guaranteed* 60 ponies! You're going to love the rotary world
Here's a helpful site for parts: www.mazdatrix.com
Also search for project threads, read the stickies, etc. Basically read up.
It's always nice to have new members, welcome!
Have fun!

er, don't start drifting until you mastered stick. give that a few months. I think the first thing you should upgrade is the exhaust. Full racing beat exhaust. But if you are really into drifting and watnot upgrade your suspension. I have tein lowering springs (don't like coilovers) and they are good and cheap. Remember to save money for tires lol.
Wow, now I see why people get like that when I mention my age around here... this is a realy good example of what probably comes to mind when they hear it.
-So, you don't know how to drive a manual, but you want to drift a rare FR sports car with 200hp?and you're only 16?
-Who's gonna pay for the car? Who's gonna pay insurance? You have a job? Because they will PIIDB you with insurance prices!
-16yo/male/turbo sportscar= high chance of an accident in their eyes as you might already know.
-You know nothing about the rotary, yet you go for the "faster" car which needs more care and knowlege, because the N/A is slow? Hmm.
-If you dont know anything about cars, get a manual car that's a beater, like a CRX or something, learn to actualy drive a car in the first place, and go take autotech, god damn it!
-From what I can see right now, you are another of those, "saw F&F Tokyo Drift or Initial D, and wants to be a car guy now kids. All you guys care about are "Mods" and being cool, and having enough "dickpower". RX-7's, to me, are not "tuner" cars like a Lan Evo, or a Honda, etc. They need a special type of person to own them. Some of you guys might agree with me here.
Dude, please, for the love of god, do some reasearch. Stock, the 5 lug cars have exelent brakes, 4pot vented 4 wheel disks. All you need is some pads and SS lines and you're set. Drifting: umm, another Tokyo Drift kid in the house?
-The FC, unlike your 240, civic, or whatever, is actually one fine car right out of the box. you don't need to mod it in any way, except for things like tires, especialy with such a low milage on it. It will drift just fine, and has WAY more power than you can handle. Have you ever even driven a LIGHT car with 200hp? A Miata has about 115-130 stock, and that's already plenty in such a light shell. The best upgrades imo, would be a full tuneup, with replacement of all fluids, better new tires if needed, and something like an SAFC and a boost/oil pressure/water temp gauges. But of course, those won't help you, since you need to know what the heck you're doing in order to utilize them correctly.
If you just want to get this because it just happened to pop up, and don't have any specific preference, I would say go with a 240, you will be much happier with one of those. If you are realy dead set on getting an FC, then I would advise you to find an N/A to learn on, since you don't know much, and they last longer/ are easier & cheaper to fix.
Well, hope that helped, sorry I'm such an *** sometimes, but I gotta share my experience somehow. Hate to be the one to crush your enthusiasm, but I'd hate to see another rotary get fucked up, and you hating sevens because you had a bad experience with one.

Buy it and baby it. Drive it so it'll be happy. remember to save money on te side for a rebuilt. I got mine when i was 16 and it was my first car. I dont know ****. But i started learning and reading through the thread. Now my brain is full of rotary stuff. I feel as if i dont know how to work on piston engine no more. Got into my car so much that i am fixing it everyday. It currently has a small water leak somewhere. Im still trying to figure it out.

asterisk. thank you for treating me like a 16 year old sh*thead other than a human being. i know i dont know a lot of stuff about cars. but i want to learn. and im not going to get this car and be all reckless and speedy and stuff. you respect a car, and the car usally treats you nicely. i want a rx-7 because there good cars. 220 hp is not way more than i need. its just right. because i can learn. i know you think that good drivers are born, but there not. it takes practice and time. sorry about the brake comment, i didnt know.
so once i get my car im thinking of getting a new exuast system. is a 3.5 downpipe to much? and i dont know that much about mufflers but would i have to get some 3.5 in muffler too? ill do my research i was just wondering of you guys know.
please dont think this is one of those kids who say F&F and was like ooh sweets i want a car like that. i want a nice rear wheel drive car. and i want to learn everything about them. so please treat me like a human rather than some 16 yearold speed freak. thank you.

Do you have alot of money?
No, this sounds better....
Do you have OODLES AND OODLES AND OMGWTFTREEGROWINGTWENTY'S?
That was a serious question. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm being serious.
Rotary's will suck your wallet dry.
So, you wanna drift? Whew.
EDIT: 0th- Tune-Up
1st- Learn to drive a stick
2nd- AutoX (it's the best basis for any kind of racing, IMO)
3rd- Beg parents for tires, cheap, used, tires.
4th- Practice sliding.
5th- Fix flooding issue.
6th- Get more used tires.
7th- Spend lots of money on aftermarket external engine parts.
8th- Drift pretty good
9th- Rebuild motor because you blew a coolant seal.
Welcome to rotaries
