problems in N/A to Turbo swap

I am putting my 88' turbo engine into my 90' N/A and I found out that the connections from the dash harness to engine wiring harness beside the ECU are different. Have any of ya'll had experience with this? Do I just need to take out the whole harness under the dash and switch them?? Can I do that? Am I in trouble? Let me know. Thanks.

I'm researching the same kind of thing, and from what it looks like, yes, you are in trouble. The S4 (86-88) and S5 (89-92) harnesses are not interchangeable.

That doesn't mean you're stuck, however.

If you search the forum, you will find that a few people have rewired the harnesses. Those who try to replace the harnesses in the car usually quit before they finish. I believe the gauge cluster and some other electronics under the dash would need to be replaced too.

The other option is to "convert" you engine to an S5 by replacing the front cover, Oil Metering Pump, and the majority of the sensors (and FI) and using an S5 ECU. It is by no means impossible (in fact looks like I'm doing it soon), but it's a bit of a pain if you've already installed the engine.

I just bought the wrong harness myself and now I have to sell it (and an ECU and other parts). At least I found out before I started installing it. I have an S4 car and an S5 engine, so I'll likely be rebuilding the engine with the required parts from an S4, S4 sensors, manifold, and harness and ECU.

As far as I know, the engine will run without the dash harness being plugged in, but I don't think you can practically drive that way, especially since you will have no idea what temp, etc, you are running.

If the S5 wiring diagrams were easier to get hold of, it would be possible but not trivial to wire an S4 plug on the S5 interior and front harnesses. It has been done, but I've never seen the diagram or what changes need to be made.

Try the search function, the 2nd Gen FAQ, and check out the tech section on http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/

Best of luck,
