loud "whooping" noise from passenger side of dash. A/C?
1990 GXL -
this has been going on for a while now. after paying attention to the sound, I am fairly certain that it only occurs when I have the A/C on. I did a search in the 2nd gen. forum and one post confirmed that it's A/C related, but that's all the info I could find on this bizarre noise! sometimes it's faint, sometimes it's like a damned wooping monkey riding in the car.
anybody have more details?

If it's intermittent and tends to happen when the compressor kicks in, it might be the expansion valve. Same thing's happening on my BMW, and it is just the frekiest noise.
I'm having to research it myself because every retarded jackanapes AC mechanic in town just says "well, I dunno, but we're going to start replacing parts from the most expensive to the least until the noise goes away, OK?"
I'm a computer geek, how did I end up with a garage full of tools? Because no one else is interested in actually fixing anything, THAT'S WHY!!!!!
I'm not bitter.
But seriously, the fan is a possibility, but if it happens at idle, park somewhere with it runnning and try to find the source of the noise. If you can pin it down, find out what part of the AC is there.
If it is the expansion valve, it's either going bad or you don't have enough oil in the system with the freon (sometimes people add freon without adding lube).
Best of luck,
