pricing question on '86
What's up everyone-
This is my first time in this section, as I own a FB and have had no reason to clutter your forum, but now i've got a question for you guys. Currently I own a '82 with a ported 12a (not sure what port job, PO had it installed), Holley 465, rb intake, rb exhaust, msd coils, yada yada yada, with 178,xxx miles. I'm at school at Michigan Tech, and when I was out riding my bike last week, I saw a pretty clean white FC on a used car/jetski/snowmobile/dirtbike lot with a dealer tag hanging from the rearview mirror. I went there today to check it out and find out a little more about it, and found that it's exceptionally clean. I looked under it and there is NO rust. Never seen the winter. the only rust is a couple of small spots on the sunroof panel. Here is the breakdown of what it is:
White FC
4 lug
no LSD
red interior
faded carpet
no bins
no underbody rust
no wheel well rust
80,730 miles
the bad:
two rust spots on the sunroof panel
feels/sounds like it's running on one rotor
brakes squeak
Besides that, everything works. They are looking to get $2900 for it. I searched around the For Sale section and I couldn't find anything that was similar. I'm contemplating selling my FB so I can get this FC. The only problem is that I won't be able to get home to sell my FB 'til Thanksgiving break. Is $2900 a fair price? He said that he really wants to get rid of it, and that if I payed full price he'd have his body guy fix the rust on the sunroof panel.
Thanks for your help.

i got mine in that same conditon exterior/interior wise but but excellent mechanically for $400 in New Jersey . In my opinion they are asking way too much for that car . Oh yeah mine was a gxl as well .
[after looking at the pics this car is better than the 86 gxl i got for $400 as for as exterior/interior goes but mechanically it was perfect . ]

Suggested retail value in Acme, Michigan: $4,850, assuming excellent condition, according to Kelly Blue Book (http://www.kbb.com).
Private party value ranges from $3k-$4k, depending on condition, I think.
Sounds like a great deal if it weren't for the questionable engine. If that's bad, I'd agree with the guy who said $500. I don't know how you could possibly blow an engine in only 80,000 miles. What does it sound like? Does it feel underpowered too? Try this buyer's guide:

Can you get a mechanic to look at it?

I'm not in Acme, i'm in Houghton, which is "The Gateway to the Keewenaw" (the Keewenaw is the peninsula that sticks off of the north end of the UP into Superior). Acme is by Traverse City, MI. From the looks of it the car wasn't driven much (80,000 miles in 20 years? 4k/year?!?), and it may be just full of carbon. If I end up getting it, i'll have them take care of the rust spots that are pictured and run a few cans of SeaFoam through. That stuff did wonders on my villager and FB, it should clear up any problems with the FC. I'll have a compression check done and check out the plugs to see what the actual problem with the motor is.
When it idles it sounds like a poorly tuned dirt bike. When I was backing it out of the parking spot it almost stalled every time I attempted to engage the clutch. One of the guys working there was walking in and watched me back it up, and then I talked to him when I got back to the shop. He confirmed that it sounded like hell and there was something wrong with it, but he also said that he had driven it for a couple of days last week when it was warmer and not all rainy and shitty like it was today, and it ran fine. It felt very underpowered. I dont' think that i've ever driven anything that underpowered. It had no problem setting off the redline buzzer, but it took a while to get there in every gear. I took it out M203 along the superior coastline for a few miles, and stopped hard to check the brakes and then accelerated hard again. It felt like my FB when my secondaries don't open up, so i'm guessing the 5/6 port actuators are stuck closed, along with firing on one rotor/only trailing spark on one rotor. It braked straight with no shimmies, but there was no way could I lock them up and they squealed something aweful, like they hadn't been used in a long *** time. I'm going to ask them about the previous owner, how many owners it has had, etc. etc. next time I go to look at it, and see if they have a piston compression tester that I can borrow and modify to check the compression.
There are no rotary mechanics around here, and I don't think that they'd be too keen with me taking their car to minnesota/wisconsin to have it checked out by a reputable shop (are there any shops that deal with FC's in Minnesota/Wisconsin)?
Thanks for the help, ask questions and i'll try to answer them.

i got my 86 gxl for 2000 with 102000 miles on it. the only thing it has needed so far was rear brake pads... knock on wood. the paint is good, and the only interior problem is the ripped leather seat
