I have a mildly streetported TII engine out of a 90.... I have no use for the engine, even though it was only built 20k miles ago, and shows compression of 90 on all faces..... You can have it for free, if you want to come pick it up.

Really, I think a few grand is a pretty fair estimate.... some people who can do their own work as far as the install, and can find an engine dirt cheap, can do it for under a thousand.

However, I'm guessing you're not quite that mechanically inclined, and will probably have to pay a fair bit for labor, even if you're able to find the engine cheap.

Before doing the swap, you should consider that the n/a transmissions do NOT hold up well to a modified TII engine. If you keep the engine completely stock, you may be able to use your current transmission, but start modifying the engine at all, and you will be wishing you'd swapped in a TII tranny at the same time.

thanks man^ i know that definitley man. I am planning to do the total swap including tranny, rear diff, half shafts etc. I am not a rotary expert but i have heard of some pretty bad rx7 swaps from where i live, none are one of the roads i want to go on...

I am also looking to do the swap myself (with the help of some friends). I found a local place that sells s4 tii engines for 895 (I can pick it up instead of paying for shipping). How much more money should I expect to spend on the swap?

I am considering buying:

- an uncut tii wiring harness (might use my N/A harness to save money)
- turbo ECU (might try to use my N/A ecu temporarily to save money)
- turbo transmission drive shaft and rear end (again might stick with N/A stuff for a while)
-walbro fuel pump (might run stock but not push boost too hard until I get it)

My question is what is the bare minimum I can get a way with spending.

I've just had mine done for about 2 months, just did a complete brake job today. Nothing crazy, just Brembo blanks and Hawk+ pads from TireRack.

There's a couple of ways of doing the conversion, I picked the low lying fruit.

1. Pay someone much more knowledgeable than myself to do it. It's not cheap, but once the tach hits 4.5K onwards.. it's fun!
2. Hunt down parts and spend an eternity getting it done. T2's are hard to find nowadays!
3. Just talk about getting it done one day.


The car sat for about 14 months (see #3 above), blown coolant seals after I purchased it. Which led me to point #1, therefore bypassing point #2. It's not as cheap as what people say. yeah only 2k and you're set! not a chance. Depends on what you already have, what you need, and how much of the work you will do. I dropped it off and picked it up... so

It's alot of fun though, even if I DO need to put 91 in it!

i bought my TII in December for $1900, no rust and a rebuilt streetported motor, with a bunch of extras. I would keep you car nice and clean and just by a TII.

An N/A ECU will not work. You can use the stock N/A drivetrain for a while, but don't expect it to last as long as a TII drivetrain.


If you are on a budget, you can always Megasquirt it. Look it up, good ECU for the owners on a budget.


I would still look around for a TII though. Don't sacrifice that vert for a TII swap. Although Vert's should've been Turbocharged from the factory.

a vert will not ever be in the museam of natural history or the Smithsonian so keeping it all original is silly

a turbo vert is the best FC - best of everything.

a clean swapped vert is- in my opinion- one of the most valuable of FCs and definitly worth swapping over buying a potentially beat up TII.

you can do the swap probably as cheap as $2000, then the sky is the limit.
Im going to tell you that as cheap as you get the swap done, the potential for a unreliable car once you start boosting it will increase, once you get the taste of boost you will want more- then that old engine will only take so much.

I did mine for about $2400.

I got the motor, turbo electronics (AFM, Boost Sensor, ECU), transmission, turbo seats, hood, throttle cable, and driveshaft for $1200

$325 was for a wideband, and Boost guage


MISCELLANEOUS: ~$900

Silicone hoses, new belts, new intake, gaskets, block-off plates, tie rods, ball joints and all new brake hard parts, and exhaust work!



Basically, I think you could do the swap for about $1500. This is only true if your car is in great shape to begin with and don't have to replace ANYTHING.

$1200 for a whole swap is not a common thing anymore- especially with a hood, seats, etc..

thats a very lucky, hard to come by price.

yep, it took me about 5 months to source the parts and install. Just got done this past weekend!

Car is a blast! I would not have been able to get into a TII that is in as good mechnical shape as this car is for anywhere near that much!

If you search, and be PATIENT!!!! you can find good deals!

I totally agree, mazda definitely should have turbo charged the vert... I think a turbo vert is unique and well worth it. Thats one reason why i bought a vert. I'm not bagging on the coupe guys now just saying that everyone has their prefrences.
