Pressing out rear bearing issue

I'm having a hard time getting my rear hub out. I needed to get it out to install longer wheel studs.

When i tried pressing the hub out, my spindle broke. Why would my spindle break before my hub being pressed out. I though hubs are supposed to come right out easily. Am I doing something wrong?

Ouch, I am assuming you used a hydraulic press. The spindle should come out easily (i've seen them taken apart with a hammer and socket) and it shouldn't break like that unless it wasn't supported properly on the press which is what I see most likely happened here.

You should be using two blocks right behind the hub which will press against the spindle in order to distribute the load as you press the hub out of the spindle. The more surface area you have to distribute the load the less likely this will happen again. Looks like all the weight was focused on the broken section.

yep. 25 ton cap.

The spindle was held up by 2 metal blocks on each side.

I tried using a puller when it was on my car and it wouldnt budge thats why i used the pres

If I were you I would try to heat it up with a torch then pull it with a puller/slide hammer while its still on the car or if you want to, try again using the press. I bet it will come out so much easier next time.

Tried that.

It looks like there is a rubber seal in the rear of the hub that i needed to take out first? Could that have been my problem?

Look at that write-up. you don't have to remove any seals before you remove the hub. Only reason I see it breaking like that is if the press was pushing down on the spindle and not the hub. Did you make sure the press was directed at the hub?

Like I said just make sure you support it properly with blocks right behind the hub as close as possible to the center to distribute the weight.

You should look into DTSS eliminating bushings while you have everything apart.....

yes the press had room to fit in there with about 2 cm away from the spindle. I see from the rxclubthread there is a clip. the the center comes out first? I was pressing the whole thing at once

I went really slow and made sure I wasnt hitting the spindle at all because I was putting alot of force down on it and nothing was happening but i guess i gave it a little too much force.

ya I installed dtss eliminator bushing a while ago. thanks though

There lies your problem.... You weren't pressing on the hub, you were pressing on the whole bearing and hub at the same time which is like pressing on the whole spindle. The hub is "the center most" part, thats what you need to push out first, which is why I asked if you are sure you were pushing on the hub, not the spindle. Then you knock out the race, then you press out the old bearing (the outer center most part).

You should be alright from now on if you learn from this mistake. Just follow those post I linked you to if you get lost.
