Unhappy powerloss over 3500revs,when revved hard???

just bought 2nd rx, series2 86 EFE?

left stood for 3yrs, oiled via plugholes then started like a dream!!

did 200 miles then had following prob...

accelerate gently(huh??u what) and all is fine.
put foot down and car runs fine upto 3500 revs then hits wall like no more to go....

car is standard UK model non turbo, complete with silly exhaust which i threw away on series one....

any ideas??

will try new fuel filter tomorrow.secondary injectors been suggested but dont know if blocked etc, and why do they 'work' in 'gentle' mode???

injection is a foreign place to me, old skool carb boy...

I had the same problem on my 86. It turned out to be rust in the bottom of the fuel tank clogging the in tank filter (at the bottom of the fuel pump). The car would idle and run part-load fine, but would not get the necessary fuel at higher loads above 3500rpm (approximately where the secondaries kick in).

just a thought: Is your clutch slipping??
My clutch slips at about 4000 RPM, for a while it felt like I had no power above 4000 either, but then I realized how much it was slipping...

You can usually tell a slipping clutch since the revs will increase, but the speed won't.

How about... clogged secondaries? Especially after sitting for three years...

Almost a hundred percent the secondaries are not opening.

The secondary injectors require more than 3500 rpm to open. There has to be a load. You can drive a n/a gently up to 80mph without a requirement for the secondarys(sp?) to open, as long its a gentle acceleration. Foot to the floor is a different animal. They will come on approx 3500rpm. If the boost sensors ground wire (brown and black on a 87, pure black on later models) is not grounded good, you can get the results you are getting.

Didn't rule out the secondary injectors completly. Swap the primary with the secondaries and try again. If the injectors are really bad, then the car won't idle and run as before under 3500.

Check that ground at the boost sensor with a ohm meter. Should be 1ohm or less from there to the neg terminal on the battery.

Also check for 12v on one pin of each of the secondary injectors. Should be there with the key to on. Don't look for a ground on the other pin. The ECU does that when it wants to pulse the injectors.

Also look at this: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...&postid=868283 and if you look for pin 2C and follow it out, you'll see that its the ground for the atp, pressure sensor, tps etc. That is why its a good idea to add an additional ground at pin 2c at the ECU. Sometimes that might not cut the mustard due to all those mechanical solder joints at each one of the sensors. Y0u might have to add an additional ground at the boost sensor to bypass a possible bad solder joint. That schematic is for a turbo model, but the principle is the same. Pin 2c is the same on n/a or turbo for the ground for those items.

If the secondary injector plugs have ever been spliced due to a fire, suspect the splice areas also.

Nope... I can't... I was too busy thinking "hmm... no power, maybe my six-ports are busted" ..but then I guess I'm prolly a dumbass... ...but hey, it's my first (drivable) manual transmission car...

I would get my charging system checked then run extra ground wires to the block, fuel pump, and ECU. The thicker the wire the better.

Thumbs up

cheers all for advice i shall check out the various elements suggested....
just replaced fuel filter which was a chore in itself, with quotes from 35 to 50 pounds (ouch, ive just been shafted???) but in end went for fuel injection filter cheap and cheerful brand10 trade price. with another replacement, matched to numbers off original, on order for 20, so my advce is shop around, fuel filter must flow enough fuel and filter particulates upto certain size in microns i guess but cant see how price hike justified here, the shop manuals on what fits what were useless, very poor referencing of car types(did they make an rx9 from 71 on, news to me!!!), filter i took off was a nippon denso unit whose numbers matched mazda 323 1.8i filter so like i say checkit out.....
anyway im off to check out all these units, and see other threads to see if i can help others also, spread the helpfulness around, cheers again all.....

Talking

well overcame my fear, picked p the haynes and headed over to a friends...
a nurse i know, asked her to let me use her scethoscope, or even better get outfit on and do tests for me, latter declined. popped bonnet, checked secondary injectors and found one connector had come loose, no spring clip....such an easy problem after all that, will be less afraid next time.....
so, no nurse action but hey i have a beautiful chick and a working rx so what the hell...

cheers again y'all
