power window problem

i searched

my passenger side window wont budge.. the first symptom was it would only go down.. now it wont do either..

i checked the FSM too, but im still at a loss.. the driver side works, but the driverside switch for the passenger side will not do anything.. as the passenger side switch doesnt do anything either..i tested the harness, i get 12v of power when i press the button down, and 0 volts when pulling up (when it should be getting 12..)

i rolled up the window with another 12v battery and just used test wires to get the power to the motor to move it up

so that rules out the motor being fried, and the fuse is ok, but the switches wont work at all

what do you guys think?

Check the driver's side lock out switch for the power window.

When the driver's side switch works but the passengers doesn't, chances are that the lock out switch contacts in the drivers switch are very dirty or burnt.

Both my power windows work. The driver's side works fine, but the passenger side works very slowly... almost painfully slowly, especially when going up. Could this also be caused by dirty switches, or something else?

Weak connection between the ground to window motor & window motor to fuse box.
This includes the driver's side lockout & switch & the passenger switch.

The switches are the main wear part. On the S4's they can be disassembled & cleaned. Just be careful when you open the switch to note where the loose & spring loaded parts go.

yeah guys, pop open the switch, you'll see how dirty the contacts are inside. A little 800 grit sand paper and a contact cleaner and you will be surprised how much better the switchs work.

ok ill try cleaning them up..

just to clarify - beforehand the driverside switch would operate the passenger side, now the driverside switch will not do anything for the passenger side..

After you clean your switches try lubing your tracks for the window it will make less work for the motor and more quiet and less binding.

Okay a little on how the system works...

The drivers switch provides the ground circuit for the passengers switch, in addition through the lock out it also provides the power for the passengers switch.

So, when you activate the drivers door switch for the passengers window, it sends 12V+ down one wire, all thw way across the car, through the passengers switch, to the passengers motor.

Then the ground half of the circuit goes from the other side of the passengers window motor, back through the passengers switch, back across the car, back into the other side of the driver's switch for the passengers window.

Now when you activate the passengers switch for the passengers window, the 12V+ is provided from the lock out switch in the driver's door. The 12V+ signal then goes from the passengers switch to the motor.

Then the other side of the motor wire, feeds back through the passengers switch across the car and into the drivers switch for the ground circuit.

So, if the passengers window doesn't work from the passengers switch, you have one or more of the following (in order of most likely):

#1 The drivers side passengers switch contacts are bad
#2 The driver's lock out switch contacts are bad
#3 the passengers side passengers switch contacts are bad
#4 or the motor is bad.
#5 the door wiring is bad

If the drivers side worked at some point (or still does work), but the passengers switch does not, then only #1 or #2 applies.
