HIGHLY reccomended. The welding of the pinion shaft makes a noticable difference, and I should know, since I've run a rack without it being welded and now I'm running one with it being welded.

There's 3 different ratios, on the S5 NA's with PS, it's a 17.4:1 ratio, on all the other cars with PS (all S4's and S5 TII's), it's a 15.2:1 ratio, and all the stock manual racks are a 20:1 ratio. A ratio with a smaller first number will be "faster", meaning that you'll get more movement from the front wheels for a given input at the steering wheel. Some don't mind the slowness of the factory manual rack, but others don't like it, which is where a manual converted power rack comes in.
The power assist does damp out a lot of the road feel, and this is much improved by simply removing the power assist and looping the lines, but then you're still pumping fluid back and forth which adds to the effort. You can then take it apart and cut out that piston for less effort and a cleaner look.
The power assist activates when you twist the imput shaft, and there's a torsion spring in there that deflects to open the valving. With the assist removed you're still twisting the spring (there are physical stops at 5-10 degrees deflection in either direction), giving you a bit of slop. Welding up the pinion gets rid of that slop.
Once you've done all those mods you've essentially got a factory manual rack, but with a faster ratio.

It's post #9 of that thread, it shows where he welded it. Once you have it apart you can put it in a vice and with a pair of vice grips you'll be able to easily feel and see the flex in there (the top of the shaft can rotate independantly of the gear about +/-5 degrees or so). Welding it up gets rid of that last little bit of slop in the system.

i'm gonna be helping out puertorican-rx7 out with this, and we really don't have the time to do real rack de-powering, so to you guys out there that have just looped the line, or plugged them... how does it feel? and are there any problems that can come from this? i know puertorican-rx7 probably doesn't have the funds to buy a manual rack either. thanks for any additional help.

If you're going to plug the ports rather than just loop the lines, be damned sure that you've got ALL the fluid out, or you could have problems. It's better to loop the lines, then the air and any fluid can move back and forth so you're not fighting that.

Look at the first two pictures. See that weld there in the second pic that wasn't there in the first? That's where you weld, or do I need to draw you a picture with crayons?
