Well after 120k miles the bearing in my power steering pump decided to start to seize up. Not a bad run, so I can't complain much. Just a little.

I know a lot of you guys would tell me to get rid of it, but I like parallel parking, so I'm keeping it for now.

Anyway, I got a few prices on on remanufactured pumps from several parts places all selling around $145. Not too horrible.

Just for grins though I called up my local Mazda parts dealer for a price. I tell him I just need the pump. He says "Well, Mazda only sells the entire assembly (pump, electrical, and resevoir) as one unit, not just the pump part." So I said, OK, what will that run me. He comes back with, get this, $1030. Its so obscene that he can't even say the price without laughing himself.

Well, I'm definetly going with the reman, and I am just so thankful that I can get the pump from other sources than Mazda (Unlike all the $$$$ plastic dash parts I had to replace a while back ).

I know Mazda gouges on most of their parts for these cars, but this was the worst one (i.e. smallest part with the biggest price) I had personally encountered so far.

What are some of the bad ones you've run into?

Quick update though:
I picked up the reman pump today from Autozone. Turns out that for $139.95 I did get the exact same setup (pump, electrical, and resevoir) that Mazda was selling for $1034.60 (and thats with a 15% discount).

Yes the Mazda one is new as opposed to rebuilt, but DANG thats a huge difference.

Well time to go get power steering fluid all over the place and install this thing.

That's an outrageous price. I should sell my used one. It worked great when I took it off of the car.

we actually had someone buy one of those pumps. it was bad when it didn't fix the car....
and its mazda usa that gouges on every part, i bet retial in japan is around $650 not cheap, but hey theres a lot of crap in that one

How about $42 for a LIM gasket (S5 TII?) ... the exact same part that mazdatrix charges $5.51 for?

Heck man I would have sold you the power steering pump out of my 86 for cheap..Hell..$30 shipped and you could have had it..I don't have any use for it..Just sitting outside in my garage..I don't need it..

I posted this on another part of the forum, but the post also applies here...

While I have not researched this info for Mazdas, I do know that for Nissan, the dealers are allowed to charge any price that they want. Basically, the dealers are the ones who decide on the going price. That is why different Nissan dealerships in a given area (like SoCal) can have totally different rates. So the blame may be on the dealerships, not necessarily Mazda corporate.

Toyota is just as bad, I called about a power brake booster for on of my eight-six's, $600+!!! I called up adavnce autoparts, $120+ core.

www.parts.com lists 1/2 dozen or so dealerships for just about any part for every vehicle make. No point in calling dealership when you can search for the part number or sift through the folders--all online. Some parts actually have pretty good pictures too.
Some dealers will actually match online prices if they are still making a profit. Go straight to the parts manager with a printout of what you need and what it cost online.

They are learning to compete with the likes of autozone/napa/pepboys....... But, you have to remember that Dealers usually sell NEW parts. They can not compete with rebuilt/recycled parts.

Prices vary from dealer to dealer. $1000 is too much for a frigging PS pump. It can be bought new for $700-850. Break out the vaseline and preparation-H. Dealers will try to make from 10% all the way upto 500% profit per item. Every wonder why that single 10 cent fuse/lightbulb/oring/whatever cost $1 at radioshack/lowes/homedepot.... but cost $5 at the dealer? THIEVES

I love my RX-7, but it's a love/hate relationship whenever I need to buy parts from Mazda. They make you bend over and grab your ankles whenever you buy stuff from them, if you know what I mean! I can't remember exact items and exact prices because I try to forget such unpleasant memories, but I've literally been shocked several times. I really don't think it's a local dealer issue, I think Mazda doesn't really want to be bothered with a 2nd gen RX-7. You're really lucky some times if they even still sell the part.

I got mine for $800 CDN for a 1990 TII ECU Engine harness.

My worst is.... $1200 CDN for a new airpump. I got mine for $80 at a wrecker. (This was on my first N/A car, I now have two airpumps sitting around...)

mazda has a suggested list price, most dealers do charge more.
this will be changing in the next few years, for a couple of reasons. the most important being that more people can get the true list price.

Well the really interesting part is that the bearing which fails can be replaced for $4.32 Can,and can be replaced in about 15 mins(once the pump is off the car.)

Part of the reason for high prices on factory replacement parts is they run the parts in large batches when they make the car and then store the parts until we need them. The cost of storing parts for 10 years can be quite expensive...
