Power steering to manual swap
Power steering to manual swap
I drive an '88 Vert with power steering. My hoses recently started leaking and I just decided to remove the belt and drive it around that way. The car is now very difficult to park and manuever, sometimes even at speed.
What do I need to do in order to install a manual steering rack?
Will I lose any drive-ability by switching to a manual rack?
Will it be easier to drive with a manual rack than with a disabled power rack?
Any help will be appreciated big time...

I've explained more than a couple of times how to make your power rack a "totally manual" rack without actually installing a manual rack. You still must remove the rack to pull the servo valve to repack everything with grease, and install some form of graphite-based lubricant in the actuator bores, but you get rid of all lines in the process, and the "manual" feeling is awesome. Do a quick search, we talk about this every week or two...

More on the subject........ I got a manual rack here fore a winter project... It looks like the hold down bracket is a different size.... Am i correct about this???
It shouldn't be...The only physical difference that I know of between the manual & power racks is the tie rod length on the right side, IIRC...
Note that I've never lined them up side-by-side for comparison...
