Power steering issue

I own a 90 fc with power steering. Now my dilema is that it doesn't get stiffer at higher speed like it should. the steering is soft even at 140 which is a little if for me. i was wonder if anyone has had this problem before and what you did to fix it. Could it be the pump or the sensor or maybe the rack itself, i don't want to buy things i don't have to.

The S5's have engine speed sensing power steering, so no it won't stiffen up at higher speeds, but besides, WTF were you doing going 140?! You're gonna kill someone.

If you want heavier steering get rid of the PS.

Riiiiiight. I track my car too, and on a 1.1 mile long straight the most I've been able to get to is about 125, and it's not like I'm going slow going onto it either.

Anyway, just unhooking the belt or whatever else you did to try it without doesn't give the true feeling of what it's like when done properly. I depowered my rack (see archives) and even with race tires it's not a problem. In fact I'm trying to get a faster rack to convert because I like it so much and I want faster steering. I daily drive it with sticky high performance tires and the only time I'd want power steering is when parking.

you should check out the straight at cali speedway next time your in califorina its one hell of a track and the straight is long as hell. i had heard of someone modifying the powersteering rack turning it into a manual rack/power rack but ive never seen the car or felt how it handled so im unsure if thats what i want to try.

Well it takes a few days to get used to, but other than going really, really slow (parking) the extra effort is hardly noticable, but the extra feeling you get is wonderful. I daily drive on 225/45/17 Bridgestone RE070's and have tracked on 225/50/15 Hankook Z211 race tires and I don't find it hard at all. The S5 rack is the middle one for speed, it's faster than a manual, but not as fast as those in the TII's or the S4's. Here's my thread from the archives. There's a better/more complete review out there that includes welding the vavlve body to get even more precise feedback.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-archive-72/how-de-power-your-steering-rack-right-way-440198/ (note: I've since changed my oppinion on the 15:1 rack's suitability for this conversion)

I'd reccomend doing it. If you're apprehensive get a spare for cheap and modify it, then you can always change back.

I don't want to start a new thread or anything but since there seems to be a wealth of knowledge in this one Im gonna give it a shot...I have an s5 na converted to t2, all the lines are hooked up and the wires are plugged in and for some reason my ps just isn't working. I want it to be feather status, I've had my old fc without power steering and thats gravy but for my plans with this car you need to be able to toss the wheel back and fourth fairly easily. so Im pretty sure s5's don't have the little thing under the dash for ps and I think the only reason it has a wire to the pump at all is to beep incase the fluid is low. any ideas?
