well, if you have a 87 or 86, the power steering computer has built in diagnostics, and beeps refering to what the error; is if it is not working.

The power steering should be smooth with the same effort at 10 mph as at 50 mph. If it is harder at lower speeds then chances are the power steering computer is either unplugged, has a blown fuse or is bad. There also should not be any abrupt changes in how easy or how hard the steering is (like it suddenly gets harder to turn when accellerating- or real easy to turn when decellerating around a corner).

I do have most models of the power steering computers rebuilt now available on my webstore/ website if it turns out you need one.

yeah, you can swap power steering computers as long as they are both from S4 models (although the 86 models tend to have more steering boost at all speeds)
